PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Manlio Marconi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dwyane Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Griffin comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Tech N9ne - Am I A Psycho? (Feat. B.o.B. and Hopsin) kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Manlio Marconi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dwyane Griffin!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Alec Ball and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin blocks a head kick by Marconi.
Manlio Marconi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Griffin keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Griffin is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Griffin darts in trying to clinch
and Marconi counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Marconi fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Griffin avoids it really well and circles away.
Marconi circles away from the clinch attempt
and Marconi makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Griffin takes a kick to the side of the head.
Griffin tries to clinch but Marconi moves away
and Marconi counters with a series of strikes. Griffin will be more careful next time no doubt.
Marconi keeps the fight on the outside.

and Marconi counters by moving into the clinch.

Marconi tries to pull guard but Griffin won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Manlio Marconi. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Griffin with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Marconi takes a knee right on the jaw!
With the fighters up against the cage, Griffin throws an elbow but misses.
Marconi has Griffin pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Griffin manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Marconi as Griffin tries to tie him up.
Marconi pushes Griffin back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Marconi drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Marconi drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Griffin gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Marconi's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Marconi drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Griffin tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Marconi presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Griffin takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Griffin is looking to get to half guard.

Marconi has control of Griffin's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Griffin regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Marconi stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Dwyane Griffin is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Marconi changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Griffin tries to avoid it but Marconi manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Griffin to the ground. Griffin escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Marconi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Griffin sprawls well. Griffin wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Marconi gets slowly back to his feet.
Griffin wants to clinch but Marconi slips to the side
and Marconi counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Marconi connects with a solid leg kick.
Griffin closes the distance but Marconi moves to the side
and Marconi counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Griffin tries to close the distance and clinch up but Marconi swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Griffin wants to clinch
and Marconi counters with a left to the body.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Griffin moves to clinch but Marconi breaks away
and Marconi counters with a head kick. That will keep Griffin thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Griffin is looking to clinch but Marconi is avoiding it.
Griffin tries to clinch up
and Marconi counters with a nice body shot.
Marconi shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Griffin as he avoids it easily.
Griffin fails in his attempt to clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Marconi goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Griffin tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Marconi manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Nice jab there from Marconi.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Manlio Marconi dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Marconi closes the distance and clinches.

Marconi ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Marconi no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Griffin is looking to stand up but Marconi won't let him.
Griffin trying to control the position from guard on top but Marconi is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Marconi is pulling down on Griffin's head. It's preventing any offense from Griffin, at least for the moment.
Griffin really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Marconi. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Manlio Marconi has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Marconi rushes Griffin and presses him up against the cage.

Marconi pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Griffin is looking to clinch but Marconi is avoiding it.
Griffin wants to clinch but Marconi slips to the side
and Marconi counters with a head kick.
Griffin fails with an attempt to clinch.
Griffin tries to clinch up but Marconi circles away and keeps his distance.
Marconi fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Griffin closes the distance looking to clinch
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

Marconi closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Marconi jumps guard.
Marconi might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Marconi is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Griffin is defending against the submission attempts here by Marconi.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Marconi is thwarting Griffin's attempts to control the position.

Marconi content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Marconi is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Griffin is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:45 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Manlio Marconi!
