PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Sam Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Norman Hartnell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sam Thomas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Norman Hartnell!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Paulsen Ambrosius and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thomas avoids a punch combination nicely.
Hartnell bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Thomas's head.
Hartnell scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Hartnell connects with a good right hand that stumbles Thomas. Thomas circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Thomas takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Nice takedown defense from Hartnell. No joy for Thomas on that attempt.
Hartnell fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Thomas manages to avoid it.
Hartnell lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.


It looks like Sam Thomas has been cut.

Hartnell's jab looks to have found its range, popping Thomas under the eye.
Hartnell throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Thomas.

Hartnell rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Thomas moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Thomas walks into a left hand.

Thomas rushes Hartnell and presses him up against the cage.
Hartnell's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Thomas has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Hartnell is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Thomas misses with a punch to the body.
Thomas has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Hartnell avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sam Thomas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Thomas wants a takedown but no success here.
Thomas is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Hartnell gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Thomas has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Hartnell is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Thomas goes for a takedown in the clinch but Hartnell prevents it.
Thomas drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Hartnell gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Hartnell has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Thomas uses from the top position.
Thomas slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Thomas swings around for an armbar but Hartnell sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Thomas's guard.
Thomas is looking to stand up but Hartnell isn't so interested in that idea.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The cut man is working on Sam Thomas's cut.
That's time! Thomas's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Hartnell darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Hartnell throws a lazy right hand but Thomas sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Hartnell connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Hartnell misses with the combination.
Hartnell misses with a jab, cross combination.
Thomas wants to clinch.
Thomas shoots in for a takedown but Hartnell shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Thomas gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Thomas ducks under a wild hook from Hartnell.
Hartnell slaps away a takedown attempt from Thomas, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Hartnell tests Thomas's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Hartnell throws a combination. Thomas tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

Hartnell fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

and Thomas counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Hartnell is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Hartnell sizes up Thomas with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Sam Thomas is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Thomas moves out of range of the strikes.
Hartnell misses with a double jab.
Hartnell tries to bum rush Thomas with a series of wild strikes but Thomas uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Thomas will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Hartnell swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Hartnell lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Thomas circles away quickly and effectively.

Norman Hartnell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Hartnell tries to bum rush Thomas with a series of wild strikes but Thomas uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Hartnell throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Hartnell swats away the attempt to clinch by Thomas.
Hartnell shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Thomas eats them both and turns towards Hartnell to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

and Thomas counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Hartnell is lucky that one didn't land flush.

and Thomas counters with a three punch combo that has Hartnell backing up. Hartnell nods at Thomas to acknowledge the strikes.
Norman Hartnell is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

and Thomas counters with a straight right hand.
Hartnell scores with a nice right hand.
Thomas tries to clinch but Hartnell is having none of it.
Thomas takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

Thomas has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Hartnell is trying to keep an underhook but Thomas manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Thomas seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Thomas is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Hartnell has managed to free his arm - good work.

Thomas is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Thomas seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hartnell does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Norman Hartnell is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Hartnell is holding on to half guard well.
Thomas prevents Hartnell from standing back up.

Thomas is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Sam Thomas has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Hartnell is defending against the submission attempts here by Thomas.
Thomas thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Thomas is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Hartnell doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Thomas.

Thomas looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Sam Thomas.
I think Hartnell has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
