Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Urijah Faber! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, John Pain! The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Steve Erwin and Skip Squint.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pain shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Faber sprawls well. Faber wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Pain gets slowly back to his feet. Pain scores with a takedown into Faber's guard. Faber is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Faber pushes Pain off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there. Pain is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Faber's half guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Faber trying to hold on to Pain's head to control him but Pain postures up.
Faber is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Pain pulls his head out easily. Faber is trying to control but can't.
Pain lands strikes from half guard. Pain winds up and cracks Faber with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Faber regains full guard. Nicely done. Faber looking to control.
Pain lands a couple of elbows. Pain postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Pain is fighting to break Faber's control of his arms but Faber is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Pain wants to control from the top but Faber keeps moving. Faber is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Faber wriggles free and stands up. Pain closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Faber quickly recovers to half guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Faber is trying to control but can't.
Faber actively working from the bottom here. Pain working over Faber with some ground and pound. Faber looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pain slips a nice elbow through Faber's hands, connecting with Faber's forehead. Faber moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Pain stays in close to Faber's body and controls the position. Pain throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Pain is stalling in the full guard. Faber has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pain can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Pain really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Faber. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Faber is trying to control the position but Pain postures up. Pain working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Faber's head. Faber looking to control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Faber has his foot on Pain's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pain works his way back into a safe position though. Faber wants to sweep here but Pain controlling him for the moment. Faber is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Faber throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Pain keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Faber throwing shots but Pain is blocking nicely. Faber is trying to work for a kimura but Pain is defending well.
Faber is nestled in close to Pain, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Faber is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Faber seems to be looking for submissions.
This has been an exciting period of action! Faber maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Pain could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Faber has cracked it and Pain is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Faber!
