PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Sai Fukuta (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vasilij Zajtsev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sai Fukuta!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Vasilij Zajtsev!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fukuta is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

Zajtsev gets a clinch.

Zajtsev has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Fukuta uses from the top position.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Zajtsev wants to stand and escape but Fukuta is having none of it.
Fukuta trying to control the position from guard on top but Zajtsev is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Fukuta prevents Zajtsev from getting back to his feet.
Fukuta in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Fukuta looking to pass the guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Zajtsev tries to clinch but Fukuta moves out of range.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Zajtsev doesn't manage to clinch there - Fukuta circles away.

Zajtsev moves into the clinch.
Zajtsev lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Fukuta backwards.
Fukuta is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Fukuta has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Zajtsev avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Zajtsev fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Zajtsev misses with the head strike.
Fukuta has Zajtsev pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Zajtsev manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sai Fukuta. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Zajtsev lands with a light punch inside.

Zajtsev pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

and Fukuta counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
No luck for Fukuta with that takedown attempt.

Zajtsev clinches up with Fukuta and pushes him back against the cage.
Fukuta fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Fukuta drops down looking for an ankle pick but Zajtsev pulls his leg out and moves away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Zajtsev fails with an attempt to clinch.
Zajtsev tries to clinch but Fukuta moves out of range.

Zajtsev gets a takedown into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Zajtsev wants to stand but Fukuta has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Fukuta is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Zajtsev pulls his head out easily.

Fukuta looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Fukuta manages to get to full guard.

Zajtsev stands up from Fukuta's guard - Zajtsev perhaps looking for a knockout.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Zajtsev closes the distance and clinches.
Zajtsev tries to work over Fukuta's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Fukuta is looking to take this one to the mat.
Fukuta tries to score a body lock takedown but Zajtsev shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Fukuta blocks an uppercut.
Fukuta fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Zajtsev has had enough of the clinch but Fukuta keeps him there for the moment.
Zajtsev softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.
Zajtsev misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Fukuta is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Zajtsev pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Fukuta wants a takedown.
Fukuta trying to stall but Zajtsev improves his position.
Zajtsev misses with the head strike.

Zajtsev breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Zajtsev tries to clinch up but Fukuta circles away and keeps his distance.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Fukuta.

Fukuta feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Zajtsev wants to stand and escape but Fukuta is having none of it.
Zajtsev keeping moving, preventing Fukuta from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Zajtsev pushes Fukuta off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Zajtsev tries to clinch

and Fukuta counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Zajtsev stops a takedown attempt from Fukuta.
Fukuta wants a takedown but no success here.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Zajtsev tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Fukuta has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Zajtsev regains guard immediately.
Zajtsev is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Vasilij Zajtsev dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Zajtsev struggles to land a body shot inside as Fukuta controls his hands.
Fukuta drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Fukuta tries for a takedown. No joy.
Fukuta can't get the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sai Fukuta. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Fukuta blocks an elbow strike.
Zajtsev pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Fukuta obliges.
Zajtsev is working for takedown but Fukuta is calmly controlling the position for now.
Zajtsev lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Fukuta avoids the elbow strike from Zajtsev, against the cage.
Zajtsev misses with a short punch on the inside.

Fukuta jumps guard and drags Zajtsev to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Fukuta looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Fukuta had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Zajtsev defends it easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Zajtsev wants to get up but he can't break Fukuta's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Fukuta has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Zajtsev can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Fukuta throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Zajtsev escapes and throws Fukuta's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Zajtsev stands up.

Zajtsev tries to clinch up.
Zajtsev moves in looking to clinch but Fukuta pushes him off.
Fukuta changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Zajtsev tries to avoid it but Fukuta manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Zajtsev to the ground. Zajtsev escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Fukuta tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Zajtsev paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Zajtsev shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Zajtsev shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Fukuta pinned against the cage. Fukuta gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Fukuta fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Zajtsev, pushing him back against the cage.
Zajtsev is pressed up against the cage. Fukuta has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Zajtsev down to the mat. Zajtsev avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Fukuta stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Zajtsev.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Zajtsev tries to clinch there but Fukuta circles away.
Zajtsev tries for a takedown but Fukuta sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Zajtsev is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
The fight stays on the outside here - Zajtsev looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Zajtsev moves to clinch but Fukuta breaks away
and Zajtsev takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Zajtsev rushes Fukuta and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Zajtsev escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Zajtsev looks for the body kick but Fukuta saw that one coming.
Zajtsev tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Fukuta counters with a nice body shot.
Zajtsev throws a series of punches but Fukuta avoids them all with ease.
Fukuta fails to land the takedown.

Zajtsev closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Fukuta pulls guard.
Zajtsev would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Zajtsev won't allow Fukuta to sweep him here.
Zajtsev has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Fukuta is proving hard to escape from.

Fukuta is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Fukuta trying to keep a closed guard but Zajtsev is proving a slippery customer.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Zajtsev is sitting in close to Fukuta's body. Fukuta has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Zajtsev is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Zajtsev is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Fukuta.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Sai Fukuta!
Our winner, Sai Fukuta, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
