The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Jeff Smith and Ryoma Takatsuka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shimazu shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Shimazu looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Penn doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Shimazu counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Shimazu dives in and scores a takedown into Penn's guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Penn had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Shimazu defends it easily.
Shimazu drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Shimazu jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Penn is defending against the submission attempts here by Shimazu.
Penn has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Shimazu is working away from the top position though.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Penn misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Penn displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Shimazu.
Shimazu shoots in and bounces Penn off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Penn wants to sweep here but Shimazu controlling him for the moment.
Shimazu lands a couple of elbows.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shimazu works over Penn with some ground and pound from guard.
Shimazu is pushing down on Penn's leg trying to pass to half guard. Penn is fighting to maintain full guard but Shimazu has managed to sneak the leg through.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

William Shimazu has got the better of the ground game so far.
Shimazu is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Penn rolls with it to try and escape but Shimazu cranks on the arm and Penn is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
