PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Samson Kekiwi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Denis Russia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Denis Russia looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Samson Kekiwi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Denis Russia!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Josh West and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kekiwi clinches.
Russia looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Russia has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Russia is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Kekiwi just leaning against Russia, taking a breather.

Kekiwi manages to break the clinch.
Russia throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Russia moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Kekiwi takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Kekiwi tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Russia throws a lazy uppercut

and Kekiwi counters by clinching up.
Kekiwi keeps control of Russia as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Kekiwi has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Russia uses from the top position.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Kekiwi has control of Russia's left arm, preventing Russia from doing any damage.

Kekiwi has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Russia can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kekiwi is pulling down on Russia's head to control his posture.

Kekiwi's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Samson Kekiwi.
Russia throws a big shot that misses.

Kekiwi swings for the body but Russia moves out of range.
Russia fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kekiwi manages to avoid it.
Russia is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Kekiwi.

so Kekiwi counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Kekiwi stands and throws Russia's legs to the side, diving into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kekiwi remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Kekiwi has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Russia!
Kekiwi takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Kekiwi looking to secure an arm triangle but Russia defends it well.
Kekiwi cracks Russia with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Kekiwi is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Russia to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Russia shrugs it off.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Russia misses with the combination.
Denis Russia seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kekiwi throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Kekiwi shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Kekiwi was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Kekiwi lands a nice forearm strike.
Kekiwi remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Kekiwi has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Russia throws a right hand that Kekiwi ducks under and follows up with a left that Kekiwi also avoids with ease.

Kekiwi gets the takedown into side control.
Russia is letting Kekiwi control him for a moment.
Russia is breathing heavily.

Kekiwi wants to stand but Russia has his arm trapped.
Kekiwi is staying tight to Russia's torso, preventing him from escaping.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Samson Kekiwi wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Kekiwi shoots in and gets a takedown into Russia's guard.
Kekiwi is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Kekiwi slips nicely into half guard.

It looks like Kekiwi is going to stand back up.

Kekiwi uses his free foot to push down on Russia's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Russia.
Kekiwi pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Kekiwi has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Russia's face.

Kekiwi has control of Russia's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Russia regains control of the situation pretty easily.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kekiwi pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Kekiwi gets a clinch.

Kekiwi turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Kekiwi wants to stand but Russia is controlling his arm.

Kekiwi lands with some strikes.
Kekiwi tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Russia is bucking up trying to escape but Kekiwi cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
The referee warns Russia that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Russia takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Kekiwi is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Russia can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Kekiwi connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

Russia is bucking up trying to escape but Kekiwi cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Kekiwi lands a big elbow.

Kekiwi get's back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Kekiwi closes the distance and pushes Russia back into the cage.

Kekiwi has hold of one of Russia's legs. Russia is fighting the takedown attempt but Kekiwi gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Kekiwi wants to stand but Russia has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kekiwi distracts Russia with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Kekiwi passes Russia's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Russia tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Kekiwi manages to move to mount!

Kekiwi working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Russia looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Kekiwi! Submission of the night perhaps?

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:44 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Samson Kekiwi!
