PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jan Kowalski (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Xyaire Howard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jan Kowalski!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Xyaire Howard!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Taro Takaoka and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Kowalski looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Howard changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kowalski tries to avoid it but Howard manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kowalski to the ground. Kowalski escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Kowalski has his takedown stuffed
and Howard counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Howard misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Howard throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Kowalski counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Howard is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Kowalski tries to score a power double leg takedown but Howard sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kowalski somewhat.
Kowalski throws a right hand that Howard ducks under and follows up with a left that Howard also avoids with ease.
Kowalski moves to clinch but Howard breaks away
and Howard counters with a three punch combo that has Kowalski backing up. Kowalski nods at Howard to acknowledge the strikes.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Howard keeps the fight on the outside.

Howard drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Howard throws an elbow but Kowalski slips to the side and avoids it well.
Kowalski is trying to control Howard's posture but Howard avoids it.
Kowalski is trying to buck Howard off.
Howard trying to control the action but Kowalski is working from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Howard throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Kowalski regains half guard, as Howard was trying to land strikes.
Howard wants to stand up but Kowalski is controlling the position.
Kowalski won't allow Howard to pass to mount.
Howard wants to take a breather but Kowalski is having none of it.
Kowalski keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Kowalski regains full guard. Nicely done.

Kowalski is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Howard is aware though and is defending well.

Howard is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Kowalski is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Kowalski has escaped and now he's on top!

Howard is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Howard working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Kowalski has passed into half guard!

Kowalski is looking for a kimura but Howard is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Kowalski to get the leverage.

Kowalski decides to stand and escape the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kowalski shoots in and gets a takedown into Howard's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kowalski stays in close to Howard's body and controls the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Xyaire Howard will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Kowalski is trying to drag Howard to the mat but Howard just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Kowalski wants to get back to striking at distance but Howard won't allow it.
Howard gets underhooks to prevent Kowalski's takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jan Kowalski. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kowalski is trying to pull guard but Howard turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Kowalski can't find room to land a body shot as Howard controls the action.

Kowalski is trying hard to land a takedown here. Howard sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Howard is defended easily by Kowalski.
Kowalski looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Howard is fending him off so far but Kowalski persists. Nope, Howard circles away and we're back to standing.

Howard moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Kowalski shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Howard as he avoids it easily.
Howard shoots in looking for a takedown. Kowalski tries to sprawl out of it but Howard keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kowalski manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Kowalski throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Howard.

Kowalski fails to land the takedown.

Howard looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kowalski wants to get back to full guard.
Kowalski has his hands clasped together around Howard's back. He's all about the action.
Kowalski is trying to maintain the position but Howard is very close to passing his half guard.
Howard is trying to control the action in half guard but Kowalski is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kowalski is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Howard's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Howard's back!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jan Kowalski will probably get the nod.

Howard throws a nice looking combination but Kowalski bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Kowalski is looking to control Howard's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Kowalski avoid being mounted?

Howard prevents Kowalski from standing back up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kowalski is trying to get back to full guard.
Howard tries to stand but can't do so whilst Kowalski controls his leg.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Kowalski connects with an inside leg kick.

Howard is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Kowalski's half guard.
Kowalski wants to get back to his feet.
Kowalski is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Howard is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Kowalski is doing well to control the position and prevent Howard from advancing to side control.

Kowalski is trying to maintain the position but Howard is very close to passing his half guard.
Howard tries to pass to full mount but Kowalski defends it.

Kowalski makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Kowalski.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Howard with a flurry of punches that miss.

Kowalski is looking for a triangle but Howard pushes his legs off easily.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Kowalski holds on and takes a little breather.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Howard accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Xyaire Howard.
I think Howard has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
