Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mike OMalley! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Steve Stevenson! The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Roger Salmon and Ryoma Takatsuka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice shot lands for OMalley. Stevenson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from OMalley.
Stevenson shoots in but no luck this time. OMalley looks to land a combination but Stevenson avoids it well. Stevenson dodges the punch combination from OMalley.
OMalley lands the left hand.
It looks like Steve Stevenson has been cut. Stevenson ducks right into an uppercut from OMalley. Stevenson tried to score with a low kick but OMalley checks it. Stevenson misses with a wild body shot. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! OMalley misses with a two punch combination.
Stevenson is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by OMalley. Stevenson takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Nice shot lands for OMalley. Excellent takedown into side control there by Stevenson.
That's one minute gone in the round. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Stevenson tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Stevenson wants to lay and pray for a moment but OMalley keeps working. Stevenson scoring with punches from side control. OMalley defending against the ground and pound. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Stevenson tries to advance to mount but can't. Stevenson wants to lay and pray for a moment but OMalley keeps working. OMalley wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Stevenson fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Stevenson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Stevenson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Stevenson goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, OMalley rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Stevenson's guard! Nice work there by OMalley! OMalley wants to get up but he can't break Stevenson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. OMalley got a little sloppy there for a moment and Stevenson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, OMalley has managed to get both his arms back between Stevenson's legs - danger averted. Stevenson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Stevenson has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. OMalley tries to stand but Stevenson is controlling from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. OMalley stands and steps away. Stevenson gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. OMalley looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Stevenson slips a jab and a cross from OMalley.
Stevenson throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Stevenson shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. OMalley defends it nicely. OMalley swinging wildly here.
OMalley moves out of range of the body kick from Stevenson.
OMalley lands with a shot to the body.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Stevenson throws a body kick that misses. OMalley scores with a decent looking hook. Stevenson takes a swing at OMalley's ribcage but misses. Stevenson throws a wild hook but OMalley just manages to duck under it and - ooooh! Stevenson gets nailed by a brutal uppercut which crumples him back against the ropes! The referee jumps in - OMalley raises his hands in celebration and walks away!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mike OMalley! Mike OMalley retains his featherweight title! Mike OMalley took to the microphone after his victory and thanked his sponsors, Fight Night Nutrition for their support in the buildup to the fight.
