Bates comes to the cage accompanied by Kansas-Dust In The Wind. Koon has chosen Zion - Fluke as his entrance music. Chris Bates could well score a knockout today. Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Chris Bates! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dan Koon! The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Dean Styles and Jonathan Paton.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bates keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Koon closes the distance and clinches. Koon manages to pull guard.
Koon is working an open guard so Bates takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Koon is trying hard to land a takedown here. Bates sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Koon misses with a wild combination.
Bates misses with a few strikes there.
Koon fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Bates sprawls well initially but Koon persists and gets the takedown into half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Bates pushes Koon off looking to stand but Koon dives back in and keeps control.
Koon is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Koon tries to pass to full mount but Bates defends it. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Koon seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bates does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
That's one minute gone in the round. Koon is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Bates sees it coming and defends easily. Bates is trying to stand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Koon is trying to control the action in half guard but Bates is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Bates is looking to escape. Bates is not content to let Koon control the position. Koon tries to pass the half guard into mount. Bates knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Koon is keen to just control but Bates is a slippery customer. Koon prevents Bates from standing back up.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Dan Koon was stalling too much, according to the referee. Bates moves into range and clinches up with Koon. Bates is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Koon to keep the fight standing. Koon has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Bates avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Koon is looking for a takedown. Chris Bates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dan Koon. Bates wants to take the fight to the mat but Koon manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch. Koon successfully pulls guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Koon is trying to keep Bates in close.
Koon is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Bates defends well. Koon is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Koon looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Bates is defending well. Koon quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Bates has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Koon celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
