PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dave Alverez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robert Garcia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Garcia has chosen Art of Fighting Theme as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Robert Garcia is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Dave Alverez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Robert Garcia!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Damien Edna and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alverez throws a right hand that Garcia ducks under and follows up with a left that Garcia also avoids with ease.
Alverez tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Alverez scores with a takedown into Garcia's guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Garcia is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Alverez misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Alverez tries to kick Garcia off but Garcia keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alverez throws a strike from the bottom but Garcia passes into side control!
Alverez throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.

Alverez drops back, looking for a kneebar! Garcia looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Garcia looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Garcia!

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

and Garcia makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Garcia shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Alverez is trying to defend but Garcia finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Garcia changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Alverez looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Garcia is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Alverez has escaped the position, nice work there.

Garcia stands up and beckons Alverez to his feet.

Alverez is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Garcia gets back to full guard.
Alverez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Alverez would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Alverez postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Garcia is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Alverez, into his guard.
Alverez wants to sweep here but Garcia controlling him for the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Alverez throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Alverez misses with a double jab.
Alverez looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Garcia is fending him off so far but Alverez persists. Nope, Garcia circles away and we're back to standing.
Garcia dives in and grabs Alverez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Alverez pushes down on Garcia's head and hops out.

Garcia drives through with a takedown into Alverez's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Alverez is striking off his back. Garcia thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.

Alverez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Alverez throws a right and a left that Garcia avoids nicely.

Alverez has managed to clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Alverez's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Alverez manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Alverez throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Garcia prevents Alverez from getting back to his feet.

Alverez wants to stand up but Garcia is controlling him.

Garcia slips nicely into half guard, despite the strikes coming from Alverez.
Garcia content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Alverez misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Robert Garcia has got the better of the ground game so far.

Alverez is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Garcia defends it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Robert Garcia will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Garcia shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Alverez eats them both and turns towards Garcia to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Garcia avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Garcia scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Garcia stands up and beckons Alverez to his feet.
Alverez tries to clinch up but Garcia circles away and keeps his distance.
Alverez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Garcia tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Alverez paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Alverez dives in and grabs Garcia's left leg, looking for a takedown. Garcia pushes down on Alverez's head and hops out.
Alverez throws a lazy head kick
and Garcia counters with a left to the body.
Nice takedown defense from Alverez. No joy for Garcia on that attempt.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Garcia throws a right and a left that both miss.
Alverez gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Garcia counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

Alverez slaps away a takedown attempt from Garcia, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Alverez takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Alverez is looking to stand back up but Garcia counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Alverez.

Alverez gets caught flat footed, as Garcia shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Garcia won't allow Alverez to get back to his feet.

Alverez is trying to stand up here but Garcia is controlling him well.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Garcia in particular looking to stall.

Garcia tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Robert Garcia spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
