Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Danny Hendo! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steve Staunton! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, George Francis and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hendo fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Staunton sprawls well initially but Hendo persists and gets the takedown into half guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Staunton trying to control from the bottom.
Hendo is nestled in close to Staunton, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Hendo drops an elbow to the side of Staunton's head. Hendo stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being. Hendo clinches. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Staunton jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Hendo walks away with a smile on his face. Staunton gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Hendo misses with a head kick.
Hendo throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. Hendo throws a right and a left that both miss. Hendo lands with a big left! Staunton is wobbled badly! Hendo comes in with a flurry of punches and drops Staunton to the floor. The ref jumps in to save him from unneccessary punishment.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:43 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Danny Hendo! Danny Hendo retains his middleweight title! During a confident post fight interview, Danny Hendo thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
