Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sparing Bjj! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Derek Patterson! The judges for this bout are William Peck, Trevor Gratis and Gregory Folan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bjj misses with a takedown attempt - Patterson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Bjj looks for a takedown but Patterson sprawls well. Patterson stuffs the takedown. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sparing Bjj. That's going to take a lot out of him. Bjj fails to land the takedown. Bjj shoots in for a double leg but Patterson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Bjj looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Patterson lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Bjj backs up against the cage.
Bjj fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Patterson stuns Bjj with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. Bjj takes a jab right on the kisser.
Bjj fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Bjj is breathing heavily. Patterson lands with a straight right. Bjj didn't see that one coming. Patterson listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Nice cross by Patterson. Bjj walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. Patterson scores with a hook to the body. Bjj takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. A jab lands there for Patterson. Bjj has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Bjj there as he acknowledges the shot.
That's one minute gone in the round. Patterson lands with a hook. Bjj tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Bjj takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. A punch lands to the side of Bjj 's head but he takes it in his stride. Patterson clinches. Bjj wants a takedown but no success here.
Bjj has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Patterson avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Bjj is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Patterson wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Patterson breaks the clinch.
Bjj takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Patterson is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot. Nice uppercut there from Patterson. Bjj takes a shot right to the bread basket. Patterson lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Patterson uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Bjj has time to react. Patterson tests Bjj's chin there with a solid looking shot. Patterson with a hook. Patterson misses with a few strikes there.
Bjj shoots in but no luck this time. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Bjj takes a body punch but keeps moving. Patterson scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bjj walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Bjj shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Patterson as he avoids it easily. Patterson is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round!Bjj had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté. Patterson connects with a nice looking jab.
Patterson instigates a clinch. Patterson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Patterson lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Bjj backs up against the cage.
Bjj has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Patterson finds it's way round the side to connect with Bjj's head. The fighters circle momentarily. Patterson darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch. Bjj fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Derek Patterson is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Patterson swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Bjj. Bjj tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Patterson swivels and escapes. Patterson closes the distance and clinches. Bjj looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that. Patterson wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Patterson is trying to break the clinch but Bjj has him pressed against the cage. Patterson breaks the clinch.
Excellent takedown into side control there by Bjj. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Patterson wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bjj advances to mount. Bjj wants to control the pace but Patterson is squirming around nicely. Bjj is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Patterson is surviving well by controlling Bjj's body position as best he can. Patterson is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. Bjj throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Patterson has his hands clasped together but Bjj breaks the hold and Patterson is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by Bjj!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:02 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Sparing Bjj! Sparing Bjj is the new welterweight champion!
