Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rod Cheney (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ryan Mendez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rod Cheney! The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendez misses with a double jab
letting Cheney counter with a right hand. Mendez moves out of range of the leg kick from Cheney. Mendez dodges the punch combination from Cheney.
Cheney lands a two punch combo.
Cheney misses with a series of wild punches.
Cheney attempts a low kick but it misses it's target. Cheney defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Mendez. Cheney moves into range and connects with a jab. Mendez misses with a takedown attempt - Cheney sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Horrible takedown by Mendez or perhaps it was just good defense by Cheney which made him look bad. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ryan Mendez. That's going to take a lot out of him. Mendez throws a series of punches but Cheney avoids them all with ease.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendez moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Cheney misses with the combination.
Cheney clinches up against the cage. Cheney lands a nice uppercut. Cheney is pressed up against the cage. Mendez has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Cheney down to the mat. Cheney avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Cheney looks for the body kick but Mendez saw that one coming. Cheney throws a right hand that Mendez ducks under and follows up with a left that Mendez also avoids with ease. Cheney fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Mendez fails in his attempt to clinch. Mendez keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Cheney cracks Mendez with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. Cheney throws out a leg kick but Mendez moves out of range and Cheney only half commits.

Mendez tries to clinch up but Cheney circles away and keeps his distance. Mendez misses with a jab, cross combination.

Cheney wants to clinch up but Mendez keeps it at a distance. Cheney stalks Mendez and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Mendez's face. Mendez staggers backwards, shaken. Mendez throws a right and a left that both miss. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Mendez wants to clinch. Cheney lands with a nice combination. Mendez backs away looking to recover.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cheney throws a low kick, looking for Mendez's leg but Mendez calmly moves out of range. Cheney moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination. Cheney moves into the clinch successfully.
Mendez is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Cheney pulls him back up using the underhooks. Mendez jumps guard but Cheney stands there with Mendez around his waist. Mendez gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Cheney is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Cheney lands a left hand.
Cheney is trying to break the clinch but Mendez is controlling him. Mendez jumps into guard, dragging Cheney to the mat.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mendez wants to sweep but no luck. Cheney working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mendez is on top in guard.
Mendez is breathing heavily. Cheney tries to land a sweep but no joy. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mendez accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Mendez trying to control the position from guard on top but Cheney is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mendez postures up in Cheney's guard and throws a big left but Cheney blocks it. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Cheney wants to get back to his feet but Mendez is in a dominant position and won't allow it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Mendez checks a leg kick. Cheney walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Mendez checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side. Cheney misses with a low kick. Cheney swinging wildly here.
Cheney throws a solid leg kick but Mendez takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Cheney. Cheney keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Cheney has Mendez up against the cage in a clinch.
Mendez keeps control of Cheney as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Mendez is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Cheney to keep the fight standing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cheney struggles to land a body shot inside as Mendez controls his hands.
Cheney wants to break the clinch but can't.
Cheney wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Mendez can't get the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ryan Mendez. That's going to take a lot out of him. Cheney is trying to force a seperation but Mendez has the dominant position. Cheney gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Mendez.

Mendez pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Cheney is keeping the position for now. Mendez loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Mendez postures up in Cheney's guard and throws a big left but Cheney blocks it. Mendez throwing strikes from guard but Cheney blocks nicely. Cheney wants to stand up but Mendez is controlling him.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Mendez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Cheney pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Mendez back to the cage. Cheney follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver. Mendez is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

Mendez shoots in looking for a takedown but Cheney manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Mendez's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Cheney blocking the ground and pound attempt from Mendez. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Cheney can do anything to dispel that myth. Cheney avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Mendez. Mendez trying to control the action but Cheney is working from the bottom. Cheney really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mendez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Cheney wants to get back to full guard.

Cheney tries to roll over but Mendez keeps him under control. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Mendez not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mendez throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Cheney works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Mendez postures up in Cheney's guard and throws a big left but Cheney blocks it. Mendez trying to control but Cheney is working from the bottom. Mendez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one. Cheney misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Rod Cheney is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. Ryan Mendez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Mendez trying to control the position from guard on top but Cheney is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
