Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Samick Behringer! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chad Mendes! The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Gregory Folan and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Behringer scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Behringer advances nicely into full mount. Behringer has control of Mendes's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Mendes regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Behringer throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Mendes because Behringer loaded up on that one. Behringer sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! Behringer trying to control but Mendes is having none of it. Behringer tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Mendes is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Behringer working away from the top, dropping strikes. Mendes is looking to get to half guard. Mendes tries to hold on but Behringer pushes him away. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Behringer throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Mendes because Behringer loaded up on that one. Mendes avoids a series of strikes thrown by Behringer.
Behringer content just to control the position here. Behringer has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendes keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Mendes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Behringer. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Mendes is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Poor strikes thrown by Behringer there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Mendes wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Behringer.
Behringer trying to control but he's not successful this time. Mendes is bucking up trying to escape but Behringer cracks him with another couple of good strikes. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Behringer looking for a guillotine from mount but Mendes is having none of it. Behringer has hold of an arm here, looking to extend it. He's committed to the armbar attempt here! Will he get it?! Yes! Mendes is forced to tap!
