Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
31 - 15 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Nikolai Kovalenko! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
25 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Namor McKenzie! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Crunch! Kovalenko slams his shin into McKenzie's torso. McKenzie looks to throw a body kick and Kovalenko counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena. Kovalenko throws a jab but it's blocked by McKenzie. McKenzie shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Kovalenko throws a sloppy body shot
and McKenzie counters with a low kick, right behind Kovalenko 's knee. McKenzie is looking to clinch. McKenzie darts in and clinches Kovalenko up against the cage. Kovalenko is trying to push McKenzie away but McKenzie has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Kovalenko pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. McKenzie throws the kick towards the body but Kovalenko avoids it. A head kick by Kovalenko misses and McKenzie counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Kovalenko lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
It looks like Namor McKenzie has been cut. McKenzie has closed the distance and engaged Kovalenko in a clinch.
McKenzie throws a head punch that misses. McKenzie keeps control of Kovalenko as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. McKenzie misses with a punch on the inside.
McKenzie lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. McKenzie misses with a punch on the inside.
Kovalenko manages to break the clinch.
Kovalenko lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. McKenzie wants to clinch. Kovalenko misses with a few strikes there.
Kovalenko lands a left and a right that send McKenzie crashing to the mat, dazed. Kovalenko thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
McKenzie is rocked! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! McKenzie tries to close the distance and clinch but Kovalenko swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. McKenzie is still on wobbly legs! Can Kovalenko finish him? Kovalenko pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Kovalenko fakes a right and follows up with a big left that drops McKenzie to one knee - oooooh, he's wobbly! McKenzie looks to clinch but Kovalenko throws him off and pummels him into the canvas! McKenzie taps out under the strikes! The fight is over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:45 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Nikolai Kovalenko! Nikolai Kovalenko really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Milwaukee's Best 160 SALE $140 logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
