PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Damian Rentz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Raivis Vidzis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Rentz might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Broken Dreams. Raivis Vidzis acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Damian Rentz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Raivis Vidzis!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Illya Tyunina and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rentz feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Vidzis controls Rentz momentarily but Rentz frees himself.
Vidzis really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Rentz. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Vidzis looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Rentz trying to control the position from guard on top but Vidzis is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Rentz slips nicely into half guard.
Rentz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Vidzis keeps working.
Vidzis is looking to control Rentz's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Vidzis avoid being mounted?

Vidzis is defending against the submission attempts here by Rentz.
Vidzis is trying to get back to full guard.
Rentz missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Rentz wants to pass the guard but Vidzis is defending well.

Rentz is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Rentz will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Rentz passes into side control, despite Vidzis's attempt to control the position.
You can see the frustration on Vidzis's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Rentz decides to stand up, so the ref orders Vidzis to his feet.
Rentz is looking to clinch.
Rentz fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Rentz doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Vidzis counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Vidzis wants to take a breather but Rentz is having none of it.
Vidzis scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Vidzis is just content to waste time from the top position. Rentz takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Vidzis is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Rentz not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Rentz has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Vidzis is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Rentz is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Rentz has escaped and now he's on top!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Rentz trying to control the position from guard on top but Vidzis is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Vidzis isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Rentz stacks Vidzis on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Rentz!
Rentz postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rentz lands a few punches from side control.
Rentz looking to control but instead Vidzis has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
Rentz looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Damian Rentz dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Rentz misses with a takedown attempt - Vidzis sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Rentz tries to bum rush Vidzis with a series of wild strikes but Vidzis uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Vidzis fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Rentz looks to land a combination but Vidzis avoids it well.
Vidzis shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rentz as he jumps to the side.
The fight stays on the outside here - Rentz looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Vidzis stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Vidzis wants it to stay on the feet.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Rentz.
Vidzis wants to get back to his feet but Rentz drags him back down.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Vidzis can do anything to dispel that myth.

Vidzis explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

Vidzis shoots in looking for a takedown but Rentz manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Vidzis's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Damian Rentz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Raivis Vidzis.

Rentz changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Vidzis looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Rentz is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vidzis has escaped the position, nice work there.

Vidzis holds on to Rentz's head and controls the position momentarily.

Vidzis tries to bench press Rentz off him but Rentz keeps the position.
Rentz is looking to take a break and control but Vidzis is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Rentz takes a little break here. Vidzis wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Vidzis is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Rentz is controlling him well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vidzis is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Rentz is looking to take a break and control but Vidzis is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Damian Rentz has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Rentz leaves Vidzis with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Damian Rentz is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Vidzis is breathing heavily.
Rentz chopping away at his opponent's legs.
A nice inside leg kick there by Rentz. That's going to slow Vidzis down.

Vidzis throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rentz's waist but Rentz gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Vidzis off to one side.

and Rentz counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Vidzis thinking.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Rentz is defended easily by Vidzis.
Rentz shoots in for a double leg but Vidzis sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rentz moves in looking to clinch but Vidzis pushes him off.

Rentz manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Vidzis on his heels. He'll look to pass Vidzis's guard now, I'm sure.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rentz is working Vidzis over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Vidzis throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Rentz was covering up waiting for the punch and Vidzis finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Rentz wants to stand but Vidzis is controlling the position.
Rentz is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Vidzis is looking to stand up but Rentz won't let him.

Rentz kicks Vidzis off and gets to his feet.
Rentz looks to land a combination. Vidzis sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Rentz keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Vidzis takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Vidzis fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Rentz stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rentz wants it to stay on the feet.
Damian Rentz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Raivis Vidzis.
Vidzis looks for a takedown but Rentz sprawls well.
Vidzis swats away the attempt to clinch by Rentz.

Vidzis gets tackled into the cage by Rentz. Rentz maintains the clinch.
Vidzis is looking to break free of the clinch but Rentz has double underhooks.

Rentz gets control of Vidzis's arms and successfully pulls guard. Rentz will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Rentz manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Vidzis manages to get himself to full guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Rentz accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Rentz is really struggling to control Vidzis but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Rentz gets to his feet - Vidzis follows without any prompting.
Rentz shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Vidzis counters with a leg kick.

Rentz closes the distance and clinches.
Vidzis's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rentz is trying to pull guard but Vidzis turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Rentz jumps guard.
Rentz wants to sweep here but Vidzis controlling him for the moment.

Vidzis stands up and waves to Rentz to follow him.
Raivis Vidzis has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Damian Rentz is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Vidzis defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Rentz.
Vidzis has a takedown stuffed.
Vidzis displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Rentz.

Vidzis looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Rentz!

Rentz is holding Vidzis down, trying to stall.
Rentz is trying to control Vidzis's posture but Vidzis avoids it.
Rentz is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Vidzis is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rentz looking for a sweep but Vidzis has passed into full mount! Oh no!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Rentz is wriggling around trying to escape.

Damian Rentz showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Rentz has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A less than humble Damian Rentz misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
