PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rick Flare (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Silla Kim (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Flare comes to the cage accompanied by Also Sprach Zarathustra. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 14 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Rick Flare!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Silla Kim!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Winston Howard and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Flare shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Kim counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Kim wants to stand but Flare has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Flare is trying to get back to full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
It looks like Kim is going to stand back up.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Silla Kim hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Flare feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Flare pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Kim is keeping the position for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Flare is working Kim over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Kim wants to stand but Flare is controlling the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Flare accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Kim avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Flare has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Flare looking to pass the guard.
Flare throws an elbow that misses. Kim uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Flare's guard. Nice move by Kim!

Flare throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Kim escapes and throws Flare's legs to the side, diving into side control!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kim wants to stand but Flare has his arm trapped.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kim decides to stand up, so the ref orders Flare to his feet.
Kim uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Flare.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Flare scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Kim takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Kim pushes Flare away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Flare gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Flare thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Flare is working Kim over with some ground and pound from side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Flare goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Kim rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Flare's guard! Nice work there by Kim!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rick Flare dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Flare just misses with a punch to the body.
Flare tries for a takedown but Kim circles away easily

and Kim counters with a takedown into side control.
Flare tries to improve position but can't.
Flare manages to get back to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kim is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Flare trying to control from the bottom.

Flare has hold of a guillotine but he's not going to be able to crank on it really with only half guard, so it's no trouble for Kim. Oh but Flare has got full guard now! Oh boy! This one could be over very soon! Kim goes limp - he's gone! Flare jumps up and celebrates with the crowd - fantastic submission finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:42 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Rick Flare!
After the fight, Rick Flare was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
