Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Steve Smith! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chris Weidman! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Gregory Folan and Steve Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Weidman tries to clinch but Smith moves away and Smith counters by moving into the clinch. Weidman is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Smith to keep the fight standing. Smith breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Weidman throws a sloppy head kick and Smith moves out of range easily. Weidman tries to close the distance and clinch up but Smith swats him away and circles back towards the center. Smith fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Weidman tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Smith counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Smith. Smith breaks from the clinch.
Smith will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Smith scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Weidman is staying active underneath Smith, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Smith wants to stand but Weidman has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Weidman wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.
Weidman manages to get to full guard.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Weidman has eaten all the pies! Weidman keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully. Smith stands up from guard. Let's bang! Weidman dodges the punch combination from Smith.
Smith drives through with a takedown into Weidman's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Smith is breathing heavily. Weidman is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Smith defends well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Weidman trying to control the position.
Weidman has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Smith doesn't defend quickly enough and Weidman has managed to lock this one up! Can Smith escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Weidman on a fantastic submission victory.
