Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Veli Schwarzeneg (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Grove (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chris Grove struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 171.6lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
22 - 35 - 2, fighting out of St Petersburg, Veli Schwarzeneg! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Chris Grove! The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Ivan Kurochkin and Konstantin Menshow.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A head kick by Grove misses and Schwarzeneg counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Grove! The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Schwarzeneg decides to stand back up. Schwarzeneg steps back and let's Grove get back to his feet. Schwarzeneg drives through with a takedown into guard. Schwarzeneg gets to his feet - Grove follows without any prompting. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Grove lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Schwarzeneg circles away quickly and effectively. Grove misses with a jab, cross combination.
Grove defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Schwarzeneg. Grove slaps away a takedown attempt from Schwarzeneg, before circling back to the center of the mat. Grove throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Schwarzeneg throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Grove was covering up waiting for the punch and Schwarzeneg finishes the takedown easily into guard. Schwarzeneg is stalling in the full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Schwarzeneg gets to his feet. Grove looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Grove stuffs the takedown attempt from Schwarzeneg. Schwarzeneg gets slowly back to his feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Veli Schwarzeneg. That's going to take a lot out of him. Schwarzeneg clinches up against the ropes. Grove looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Schwarzeneg keeps control of Grove as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Schwarzeneg is working on a single leg takedown against the ropes. Grove can't fight it off and eventually Schwarzeneg manages to take the fight to the floor. Grove looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard. Schwarzeneg thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Schwarzeneg decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Grove misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Grove stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Grove wants it to stay on the feet. Schwarzeneg clinches up against the ropes. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Schwarzeneg is looking to control Grove's arms but Grove gets an underhook and turns him. Now Schwarzeneg has his back to the ropes. Schwarzeneg has Grove pressed against the ropes, preventing Grove from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Schwarzeneg is trying to drag Grove to the mat but Grove just about manages to keep his footing. He used the ropes to his advantage there. Schwarzeneg has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Grove regains guard immediately. Schwarzeneg controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Grove wants to stand but Schwarzeneg is controlling the position. Schwarzeneg forces his way into half guard. Schwarzeneg seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Grove does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Schwarzeneg wants to work for an arm triangle but Grove is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Schwarzeneg is nestled in close to Grove, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Grove is not content to let Schwarzeneg control the position. Schwarzeneg decides to stand and escape the position. Grove misses with a double jab.
Grove looks winded! Grove leaves Schwarzeneg with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Schwarzeneg throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Grove tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Schwarzeneg is in Grove's guard. Schwarzeneg looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Schwarzeneg passes easily into side control. Nice work. This has been an exciting period of action! Grove tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Schwarzeneg easily slips into full mount! Grove taking shots to the head. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Schwarzeneg cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Grove really wants to buck Schwarzeneg off and get back to his feet. Schwarzeneg scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Grove really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Schwarzeneg. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Grove is in a horrible position here. Schwarzeneg smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Schwarzeneg cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Schwarzeneg with shots to the head and body - Grove looks very uncomfortable down there. Grove is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Schwarzeneg with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Schwarzeneg landing strikes from the mount. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Veli Schwarzeneg dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Schwarzeneg shoots in looking for a takedown but Grove manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Schwarzeneg's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Grove is rocked! Grove drops his hands for a split second and Schwarzeneg immediately capitalizes on the opportunity by smashing a powerful hook into Grove face, sending his mouthguard sailing through the air, much to the delight of the crowd. Schwarzeneg follows up with a right hand that knocks Grove into next week. He's out cold and this fight is over!
