Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Johannes Maanpohja! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Patrick Nolan! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Leandro Rodrigues and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Horrible takedown by Nolan or perhaps it was just good defense by Maanpohja which made him look bad. Maanpohja gets the takedown into side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Maanpohja is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Nolan has escaped the position, nice work there. Maanpohja wants to lay and pray for a moment but Nolan keeps working. Nolan is looking for a sweep. Maanpohja is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Nolan knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. You can see the frustration on Nolan's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Maanpohja decides to take the fight back to the feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Maanpohja shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Maanpohja showed some decent athleticism there. Maanpohja perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Nolan trying to control here.
The fighters are battling for position here. Nolan manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Maanpohja might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Maanpohja wants to control from the top but Nolan keeps moving. Maanpohja pushes down on Nolan's leg and manages to get into half guard. Maanpohja controlling the pace. Maanpohja looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nolan trying to get back to full guard but Maanpohja takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount! Maanpohja looking to control but Nolan is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Maanpohja is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Nolan to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Nolan shrugs it off. This has been an exciting period of action! Maanpohja is trying to take his opponent's back.
Maanpohja has hold of Nolan's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Nolan manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Maanpohja wants to control the pace but Nolan is squirming around nicely. Nolan is wriggling around here but as he tries to escape, Maanpohja has taken his back.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nolan trying to control the hands but Maanpohja breaks the grip. Maanpohja working for a choke but Nolan is defending well. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Maanpohja is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Nolan taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Maanpohja.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Johannes Maanpohja! Johannes Maanpohja decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
