PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gareth Bale (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Messer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mark Messer told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Gareth Bale!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Mark Messer!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Donald Grub and Phil Schofield.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bale wants to clinch but Messer slips to the side
and Messer counters with a series of strikes. Bale will be more careful next time no doubt.

Bale closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Bale ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Bale no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Bale tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Messer tries to free his leg and advance position but Bale is retaining full guard.
Bale keeping moving, preventing Messer from controlling successfully.
Bale is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Mark Messer.

Messer pushing out the jab but it's not landing.

Messer gets tackled into the cage by Bale. Bale maintains the clinch.

Messer gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Bale.
Messer wants to get back to striking at distance but Bale won't allow it.

Messer lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Messer wants to take the fight to the mat but Bale manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Messer on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Bale escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Bale turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Bale manages to end up in side control.
Messer sneaks back into half guard.
Messer is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Bale's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Bale's back!

Messer is looking for the choke from the back position but Bale is controlling his hands well.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Will Messer go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Bale rolls, trying to escape but Messer keeps control of the position.
Messer is not going to allow Bale to sit and survive in this position.
Bale avoids the strikes from Messer.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Messer tries to get the hooks in deep but Bale pushed the leg off.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mark Messer dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Messer goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Messer misses with a takedown attempt - Bale sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Bale moves into the clinch successfully.
Bale lands an elbow that stopped Messer in his tracks for a moment.


It looks like Mark Messer has been cut.
Messer tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Bale smiles and moves away.
Messer closes this distance looking for a takedown but Bale circles away.
Gareth Bale has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mark Messer.

Bale scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Messer is not content to let Bale control the position.

Messer tries to bench press Bale off him but Bale keeps the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Messer is trying to control Bale's posture but Bale avoids it.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Bale wants to stand but Messer is controlling his arm.
Messer manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Messer trying to hold on to Bale's head to control him but Bale postures up.

We're going to have a standup here because Gareth Bale wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Bale tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Messer paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Messer stuffs the takedown.

Messer wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Bale has him pressed against the cage.

Messer has had enough of the clinch but Bale keeps him there for the moment.
Bale stalling the fight.
Bale lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Messer jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Bale walks away with a smile on his face. Messer gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Sloppy strikes from Messer. Those never looked like landing.

and Bale counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
Messer is breathing heavily.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Bale throws a head kick that misses.
Messer throws a head kick that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Mark Messer will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Bale avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Bale tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Messer rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Bale moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
No joy there for Messer, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Bale explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.

Messer is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Bale pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Bale keeps control of Messer as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Messer throws a left and a right that both miss
and Bale counters with a slapping leg kick.
Messer misses with a wild combination.
Messer takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Bale lets loose with a powerful body kick. Messer will feel that in the morning.
A solid leg kick lands there for Bale.

Bale has taken the fight to the clinch.
Bale keeps control of Messer as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Messer jumps guard but Bale stands there with Messer around his waist. Messer gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Messer lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Bale circles away quickly and effectively.
A nice inside leg kick there by Bale. That's going to slow Messer down.
Bale lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Messer shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Bale as he jumps to the side.
