Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, James Smith! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, David Funk! The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Tatsuya Matsuyama.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Funk. Smith walks into a left hand. Funk bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick. Funk throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Smith has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. Smith shoots in for a takedown but Funk shows good takedown defense. Funk moves into the clinch successfully.
Funk's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Funk throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Funk gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Funk decides to pull guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Smith sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Funk's guard. Smith is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Smith is trying to work for a kimura but Funk is defending well.
Funk really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Funk is trying to stand.
