PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ding Lee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ding Lee has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ding Lee!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, James Smith!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Kenichi Hosakawa and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lee will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Smith feints and as Lee raises his hands in defense, Smith changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Smith drops back looking for a leg! Lee is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Lee manages to kick Smith off! Smith jumps back into Lee's guard.

Lee working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smith doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smith manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Smith passes Lee's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters are battling for position here. Lee manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Smith controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Lee escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Smith is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. James Smith wasn't active enough on the ground.
Lee scores with a kick to the body.
Smith misses with a straight right.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lee fails to land the takedown.
Lee misses with a double jab.
Lee shoots and misses

and Smith counters with a single leg into guard. Lee didn't expect that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ding Lee. That's going to take a lot out of him.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Lee has a closed guard, preventing Smith from standing up.

Smith avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Lee is breathing heavily.

Smith gets to his feet - Lee follows without any prompting.

Lee closes the distance and clinches up with Smith, looking for a takedown. Lee pushes Smith against the cage but Smith circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Smith looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Smith performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

Smith is looking for a kimura but Lee is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Smith to get the leverage.
Lee is trying to maintain the position but Smith is very close to passing his half guard.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Smith is working for a submission of some sort.

Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Lee is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold.

Smith drops an elbow to the side of Lee's head.
Lee is trying to maintain the position but Smith is very close to passing his half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Smith in particular looking to stall.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith tries to pass the half guard into mount. Lee knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Lee darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Lee wants to work for an arm triangle but Smith is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Smith is looking to improve his position.
Lee thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Smith's head.
Lee is trying to control the action in half guard but Smith is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
James Smith has got the better of the ground game so far.

Smith is looking for a sweep. Lee is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Lee is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Smith defends it well.

Smith makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Smith.

Lee throwing strikes from guard but Smith blocks nicely.
Lee wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.
Lee trying to stand up but can't free himself from Smith's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lee pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Smith is keeping the position for now.
Smith is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up. James Smith was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Lee scores with a nice strike.

Lee forces Smith back against the cage and clinches.
Smith stops a takedown attempt from Lee.
Lee is working for takedown but Smith is calmly controlling the position for now.
Lee is trying to drag Smith to the mat but Smith just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ding Lee. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Smith gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Lee regains guard.

Lee thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Smith got a little sloppy there for a moment and Lee has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Smith has managed to get both his arms back between Lee's legs - danger averted.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Lee can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Smith controls the pace.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Smith wants to control from the top but Lee keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ding Lee will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Smith misses the body punch

and Lee counters by clinching up.
Lee can't get the takedown.
Lee is trying to force a seperation but Smith has the dominant position.

Lee's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Lee pushes Smith up against the cage in a clinch.
Lee lands a nice knee to the body.

Lee escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Lee chopping away at his opponent's legs.

and Smith counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smith trying to control but Lee is working from the bottom.
Lee looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Smith thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Smith wants to get up but he can't break Lee's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Smith's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Lee has his foot on Smith's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Smith works his way back into a safe position though.

Lee digs a good body shot into Smith's ribs.
Lee throws a front kick that sends Smith stumbling back into the cage.
Lee shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense.

Smith feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Smith drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Smith jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Lee not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Lee is striking off his back. Smith thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.

Smith tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Lee.

Smith moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Smith lands a few punches from side control.

The referee asks Smith politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Smith prefers to stall for the moment though.
Lee is trying to buck Smith off.
Lee tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Smith wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Smith just content to control the position.
