Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alexander Gusev! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rafael Rodriguez! The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Fedor Mirinova and Dmitry Maklakov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gusev closes the distance looking to clinch and Rodriguez counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Gusev falls off balance throwing a combination
and Rodriguez counters by moving into the clinch. Gusev misses with a short punch on the inside. Rodriguez breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gusev tries to clinch up. Rodriguez throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Gusev tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Rodriguez is in Gusev's guard. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Rodriguez decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Gusev, up you get! Rodriguez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Rodriguez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Rodriguez prevents Gusev from escaping the position. Rodriguez stands up and beckons Gusev to his feet. The fight moves into the clinch position. Rodriguez breaks the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gusev tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rodriguez swats him away and circles back towards the center. Rodriguez closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Rodriguez is looking to advance position but Gusev won't allow it. Rodriguez throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Rodriguez tries to pass to full mount but Gusev defends it. Gusev wants to get back to his feet.
Rodriguez is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Rodriguez is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Gusev looks like he's trying to stand up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rodriguez trying to pass the guard but Gusev defending well. Rodriguez slows the pace down in half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Rodriguez wants to pass to mount but Gusev is defending the position. Still in half guard, Rodriguez seems content to control. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rafael Rodriguez has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Gusev sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs. Rodriguez blocks a head kick by Gusev.

Rodriguez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Gusev is looking to clinch but Rodriguez is avoiding it.
Rodriguez swats away the attempt to clinch by Gusev. Rodriguez dives in and scores a takedown into Gusev's guard. Gusev wants to stand up but Rodriguez is controlling him. Gusev is breathing heavily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Rodriguez loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Rodriguez sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Gusev's guard. Rodriguez decides to stand up. Rodriguez gets the takedown into side control. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Rodriguez takes a little break here. Gusev wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Gusev pushes Rodriguez away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Rodriguez gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Rodriguez cracks Gusev with a big right hand but Gusev just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Rodriguez content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gusev fails with an attempt to clinch.
Rodriguez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Gusev sprawls well initially but Rodriguez persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Rodriguez performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Rodriguez tries to pass the half guard into mount. Gusev knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Rodriguez perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Rafael Rodriguez wasn't active enough on the ground. Rodriguez lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Gusev shoots in looking for a takedown. Rodriguez tries to sprawl out of it but Gusev keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Rodriguez manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Rodriguez has taken the fight to the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rodriguez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Gusev tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Rodriguez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Rodriguez decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Rodriguez is taking a breather. Gusev says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Gusev is trying to stand.
Rodriguez takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Rodriguez controlling the pace. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Rodriguez wants to free his trapped foot but Gusev is holding on for dear life with his legs. Rodriguez has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Rodriguez circles away from the clinch attempt and Rodriguez decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Gusev's guard. Gusev is working an open guard so Rodriguez takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Rodriguez looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it. Nice body kick there by Gusev. This has been an exciting period of action! Gusev tries a head kick but it misses.
Gusev misses with a body kick. Gusev is looking to clinch. Gusev changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rodriguez tries to avoid it but Gusev manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rodriguez to the ground. Rodriguez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Alexander Gusev seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Gusev shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rodriguez as he jumps to the side. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alexander Gusev. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Rodriguez clinches up with Gusev and pushes him back against the cage. Rodriguez content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Gusev tries to break the clinch but Rodriguez is controlling the position. Rodriguez stalls. Rodriguez manages to pull guard.
Rodriguez is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Rodriguez jumps guard.
Gusev wants to get up but he can't break Rodriguez's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rafael Rodriguez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Rodriguez shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Gusev manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rodriguez drops back looking for a leg! Gusev is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Gusev manages to kick Rodriguez off! Rodriguez jumps back into Gusev's guard. Rodriguez controls from within his opponent's guard. Rodriguez landing with the ground and pound. Gusev is wriggling around but Rodriguez manages to pass to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Gusev wants to get back to his feet. Rodriguez stands up out of the half guard. Rodriguez shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Gusev manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Rodriguez is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Rodriguez won't allow Gusev to get back to his feet. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Rodriguez working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Gusev is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Rodriguez dives into side control.

Rodriguez bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. The referee asks Rodriguez politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Rodriguez prefers to stall for the moment though. Rodriguez lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Gusev down.
Gusev is pushing Rodriguez's head away, looking to escape. Rodriguez manages to hold on to the position though. Rodriguez is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position. Gusev is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Rodriguez is controlling him well. Alexander Gusev has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Rodriguez has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Gusev is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Rodriguez yanks on the arm and Gusev is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Rodriguez.
