The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gruber throws a hook but Ualesi avoids it easily.
Ualesi swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Gruber bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Ualesi's head backwards.
Hans Gruber seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gruber looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Ualesi stuffs the takedown attempt from Gruber. Gruber gets slowly back to his feet.
Gruber misses with a takedown attempt - Ualesi sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ualesi leaves Gruber with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Gruber has control of Ualesi's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Ualesi regains control of the situation pretty easily.

You get the feeling that Ualesi really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Ualesi is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gruber won't allow Ualesi to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gruber is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Ualesi is looking to stand up but Gruber isn't so interested in that idea.
Gruber wants to pass the guard but Ualesi is keeping the position.
Ualesi keeping moving, preventing Gruber from controlling successfully.
Ualesi really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gruber. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Ualesi wants to stand and escape but Gruber is having none of it.

Gruber thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Gruber won't allow Ualesi to get back to his feet.
Gruber would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Gruber works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Ualesi avoids a punch combination nicely.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
