The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Illya Tyunina and Sergei Dronov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Akulov shoots in looking for a takedown but Spiller manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Akulov's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Akulov dives in and scores a takedown into Spiller's guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Spiller is on top in guard.
Akulov is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Akulov seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Akulov seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Spiller for as long as he can get away with.
Spiller is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Spiller has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Akulov can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

We're going to have a standup here because Uzbek Akulov wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Akulov leaves Spiller with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Spiller takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Akulov pushes Spiller off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Spiller changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Akulov tries to avoid it but Spiller manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Akulov to the ground. Akulov escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
