Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Reagen Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ramon Monzon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Reagen Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ramon Monzon!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Micheangelo Fripello and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Monzon as he avoids it easily.
Penn dives in and grabs Monzon's left leg, looking for a takedown. Monzon pushes down on Penn's head and hops out.

Monzon is trying hard to land a takedown here. Penn sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Monzon shoots in looking for a takedown but Penn manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Monzon's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
You can see the frustration on Penn's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Penn has control of Monzon's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Monzon regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Penn wants to control the pace but Monzon is squirming around nicely.

Penn is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Monzon is surviving well by controlling Penn's body position as best he can.
Monzon is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.

Penn jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Monzon manages to avoid the submission attempt.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Ramon Monzon will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Penn changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Monzon looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Penn wants to stand but Monzon is holding on to him, trying to stop him posturing up.
You get the feeling that Monzon really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Penn misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Penn cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!


Monzon is rocked!

Penn has hold of Monzon's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Monzon manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Monzon is still in real trouble! Can Penn finish him?
Penn fails to advance to Monzon's back.

Penn moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Monzon has worked his arm free - good work by Monzon!

Monzon cracks Penn with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Penn from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Monzon doesn't have the hooks in and Penn manages to turn into his guard.

Monzon is looking to stand back up but Penn counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Monzon.

Reagen Penn dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Monzon with a lazy takedown attempt

so Penn counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Penn tries to free his leg and advance position but Monzon is retaining full guard.

Monzon is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Penn thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Monzon is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Monzon is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Monzon takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Penn prevents Monzon from getting back to his feet.

Penn gets to his feet. Monzon looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Penn manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Monzon on his heels. He'll look to pass Monzon's guard now, I'm sure.

Monzon is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Penn is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Monzon to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Monzon shrugs it off.
Penn wants to control the pace but Monzon is squirming around nicely.

Monzon tries to lock up and control but Penn gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Monzon is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Penn looking to ground and pound but Monzon is blocking nicely.
Poor strikes thrown by Penn there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Penn won't let Monzon get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Penn can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Monzon is looking to escape.

Well Penn has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
