PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between James Kent (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and William Conn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Kent!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, William Conn!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Steve Montenegro and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Conn fails with an attempt to clinch.
Conn moves in looking to clinch but Kent pushes him off.
Conn falls off balance throwing a combination

and Kent holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Kent landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Kent lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.
Kent lands an elbow inside.

Kent pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Conn shoots in looking for a takedown. Kent tries to sprawl out of it but Conn keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kent manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Kent keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Conn.
Conn throws a series of strikes that have Kent backpedaling.
Conn misses with a double jab.
Nice defenses there by Kent.
Kent fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Conn avoids it really well and circles away.

Conn connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Kent's hands.
Kent has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Kent there as he acknowledges the shot.
No joy there for Conn, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Conn moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Kent.
Kent blocks the body kick.
Conn throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Conn moves in looking to clinch but Kent pushes him off.
Sloppy strikes from Kent. Those never looked like landing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Conn blocks a leg kick.
Conn scores with a crisp jab that stopped Kent in his tracks.
Kent tries to clinch up but Conn circles away and keeps his distance.
Kent pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Kent shoots in for a takedown but Conn shows good takedown defense.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Kent. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Conn throws a series of punches but Kent moves out of range.
No joy there for Conn, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Conn fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kent manages to avoid it.

Kent tries to pull guard but Conn forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Conn wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Kent has him pressed against the cage.
Conn tries to break free but Kent pushes him back against the cage.
Kent tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Conn just stands there and leans against the cage.
Conn has a couple of punches blocked by Kent.
Conn is trying to break the clinch but Kent has him pressed against the cage.
Conn wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Kent breaks from the clinch.
Conn throws a series of punches but Kent avoids them all with ease.
A punch combination from Conn misses.

Conn tries to keep at a distance but Kent has taken the fight into the clinch.

Kent pulls guard effortlessly.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kent is on top in guard.
Conn looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Kent trying to control but Conn is working from the bottom.
Kent is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Conn is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Conn avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but William Conn will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Kent throws a sloppy head kick and Conn moves out of range easily.

Kent dives in and scores a takedown into Conn's guard.

Kent throws a big elbow that misses.
Kent sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Conn's guard.

Kent is working for a submission of some sort.
Kent works his foot free and advances to mount.

Conn is squirming around, avoiding Kent's attempts to control the action.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Conn is working to get back to half guard.
Kent lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Kent is looking to work his way around to Conn's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Conn tries to hold on but Kent postures up.
Kent thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Kent throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Conn tries to hold on but Kent pushes him away.

Conn is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Conn is trying desperately to improve position.

Kent stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Kent cracks Conn with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Kent tries to clinch up but Conn circles away and keeps his distance.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Kent.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kent slaps away a takedown attempt from Conn, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Kent looks to land a combination but Conn avoids it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Kent closes the distance and clinches.
Conn prevents a takedown attempt there.
Conn taking a breather.
Kent is pressed up against the cage. Conn has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Kent down to the mat. Kent avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Conn shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Kent sprawls well. Kent wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Conn gets slowly back to his feet.

Kent throws the kick towards the body but Conn avoids it.
Conn throws a chopping leg kick but Kent manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
A big left from Conn misses.
Conn swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Kent counters with a good, hard body kick but Conn shrugs it off.

Conn scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Kent tries to clinch but Conn moves out of range.
Conn stuffs the takedown attempt from Kent. Kent gets slowly back to his feet.

Kent is looking to clinch but Conn is avoiding it.

Conn is pressed up against the cage. Kent has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Conn down to the mat. Conn avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Kent misses with a takedown attempt - Conn sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

This has been an exciting period of action!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Conn is defended easily by Kent.

Conn tries to bum rush Kent with a series of wild strikes but Kent uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Conn works over Kent's head and body with a nice combination.
Kent walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Kent misses with a double jab.
Conn misses with a two punch combination.
Kent tries to clinch but Conn moves out of range.
Kent tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Conn scores with a one two! Kent had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Conn looks to land a combination but Kent avoids it well.
Conn throws out a leg kick but Kent moves out of range and Conn only half commits.
Conn misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Kent will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
William Conn seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Kent throws a nice looking combination but Conn bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

That kick from Kent tenderised Conn's leg. Conn is trying to keep his angry face on.

William Conn comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Conn has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
