Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Maikon Kelvin! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Demetrious Johnson! The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Colin Fray and Josh West.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kelvin wants to clinch up but Johnson keeps it at a distance. Kelvin gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily enabling Johnson to counter with a crisp jab. Kelvin gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Johnson counters with a shoot takedown. Kelvin fights it but they end up in guard. Kelvin looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Johnson trying to control the position from guard on top but Kelvin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Johnson pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Kelvin is keeping the position for now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Johnson stops Kelvin from standing up. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Kelvin holds on and takes a little breather. Kelvin is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
That's one minute gone in the round.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Maikon Kelvin. Kelvin fails with the takedown and Johnson counters with a one-two to the body. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Maikon Kelvin. That's going to take a lot out of him. Kelvin changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Johnson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. You can see the frustration on Johnson's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Johnson gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Kelvin looking to finish with strikes here!
Johnson tries to improve his position but Kelvin has taken his back! Kelvin has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Johnson tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Kelvin pushes Johnson away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!
