PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jacob Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Garner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jacob Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, John Garner!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, William Gold and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith closes the distance and pushes Garner back into the cage.
Smith scores with a nice hook to the head.
A bit of stalling here from Smith.
Garner jumps guard but Smith turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Garner pulls Smith into guard.
Smith slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Garner is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Smith pushes down on Garner's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Garner manages to get to full guard.
Garner can't keep his opponent in guard - Smith advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Garner is looking to control Smith's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Garner avoid being mounted?
Smith trying to mount his opponent but Garner defends it.
Smith perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Smith thows a huge punch but Garner dodges it nicely.
Smith passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Garner!
Garner tries to hold on but Smith postures up.

Smith trying to control but Garner is having none of it.
Smith in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

Smith swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Garner is now in Smith's guard. A big mistake from Smith there, giving up the dominant position!
Smith not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Garner prevents Smith from getting back to his feet.
Smith manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Garner manages to get himself to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Garner escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smith has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Garner is proving hard to escape from.

We're going to have a standup here because Jacob Smith wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

and Smith counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Smith tries to land knees in the clinch but Garner avoids the damage to the body.

Smith turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Smith avoids the strikes from the bottom by Garner.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Garner is not content to let Smith control the position.
Smith tries to get to his feet but Garner is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Smith in his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jacob Smith dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Some wild striking there from Garner.
Smith shoots in but no luck this time.

Garner pushes Smith away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Smith gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Smith has knee on belly and moves into mount.

Smith takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Garner is bucking up trying to escape but Smith cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Smith has control of Garner's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Garner regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Smith looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Smith is looking to stand but Smith has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

Garner wants to control but Smith is having none of it.
Garner is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes.
Garner is squirming around, avoiding Smith's attempts to control the action.
Garner tries to hold on but Smith pushes him away.
Garner is looking to get to half guard.
Garner trying desperately to get to his feet.
Garner is breathing heavily.
Smith with a couple of short strikes.

Smith controlling the position easily from mount.
Garner is wriggling around trying to escape.
Smith looking to control but Garner is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Garner is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Smith goes for an armbar but Garner turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Garner.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Garner avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jacob Smith dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Garner shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smith but Smith pushes him off and we're back to square one.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Smith.
Garner tries to clinch up but Smith circles away and keeps his distance.
Smith attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Garner throws a head punch that misses.
Smith tries to score a body lock takedown but Garner shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Garner lands a left hand that snaps the head of Smith backwards.

Smith has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Garner is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jacob Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Smith jumps guard and drags Garner to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Jacob Smith overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Garner in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Garner wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

Smith is working an open guard so Garner takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Garner is trying hard to land a takedown here. Smith sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Smith shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Garner but Garner pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Smith pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Garner fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Smith, pushing him back against the cage.
Garner has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Garner tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Smith just stands there and leans against the cage.

Garner is defending well against a takedown attempt.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Garner jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Smith walks away with a smile on his face. Garner gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Smith gets caught flat footed, as Garner shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Garner stays in close to Smith's body and controls the position.

Garner drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Garner jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Smith looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Smith trying to keep a closed guard but Garner is proving a slippery customer.
Garner postures up in Smith's guard and throws a big left but Smith blocks it.
Smith keeping moving, preventing Garner from controlling successfully.
Smith is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jacob Smith wasn't doing enough on the ground.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Smith is defended easily by Garner.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Smith swats away the attempt to clinch by Garner.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Garner comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Smith has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
