PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Trey Kennedy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Friar Santiago (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Trey Kennedy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Friar Santiago!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kennedy tries to clinch there but Santiago circles away.
Santiago circles away from the clinch attempt
and Santiago connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
A low kick from Santiago misses
and Santiago takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Santiago waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Kennedy.
Kennedy tries to close the distance and clinch up but Santiago swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Santiago lands a head shot.
Santiago scores with the left hand. Kennedy knows he should have avoided that one.
Santiago throws a jab but it's blocked by Kennedy.

Kennedy moves into the clinch successfully.
Santiago wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Kennedy has him pressed against the cage.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Kennedy.
Kennedy is trying to stall.
Kennedy with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.


It looks like Friar Santiago has been cut.
Santiago is trying to break the clinch but Kennedy is controlling him.
Santiago throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Kennedys head.
A frustrated look appears on Santiago's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Santiago can't break the clinch.
Santiago lands a shot to the body.
Santiago takes a knee right on the jaw!
Santiago has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Kennedy misses with a knee strike.
Kennedy lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Kennedy using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Santiago has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Kennedy tries to land a knee to the head but Santiago blocks with his arms.
Kennedy lands a good knee to the midsection. Santiago won't want to take too many of those.

Kennedy throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Santiago is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Kennedy tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Santiago is trying to break the clinch but Kennedy has him pressed against the cage.
Kennedy is pressed up against the cage. Santiago has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Kennedy down to the mat. Kennedy avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Santiago bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Kennedy's head.
Santiago avoids a punch combination nicely.
Santiago fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Kennedy avoids it really well and circles away.
Trey Kennedy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Friar Santiago.
Santiago shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kennedy defends it nicely.

Santiago throws a head kick that misses.
Santiago looks to land a combination. Kennedy sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Santiago throws a sloppy head kick
and Kennedy counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

A nice right hand lands inside from Santiago.

Kennedy looking to throw knees to the head but Santiago is blocking nicely.

A shot to the body from Santiago misses
and Kennedy counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
Santiago tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kennedy swivels and escapes.
Kennedy wants to clinch up but Santiago keeps it at a distance.
Kennedy displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Santiago.
Santiago misses with a looping left.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Santiago keeps the fight on the outside.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Kennedy tries to clinch but Santiago is having none of it.
Santiago looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Kennedy misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Santiago has a takedown stuffed.
Kennedy tries to close the distance and clinch but Santiago swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Kennedy ducks right into an uppercut from Santiago.
Kennedy wants to clinch up but Santiago keeps it at a distance.

Kennedy clinches up against the cage.
Kennedy tries to stall but Santiago uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Kennedy misses with some punches.
Santiago is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Kennedy with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Kennedy tries to land a knee to the head but Santiago blocks with his arms.
Santiago wants a takedown but no success here.
Trey Kennedy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Friar Santiago.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kennedy postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Santiago throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Santiago bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kennedy's guard.
Kennedy keeping moving, preventing Santiago from controlling successfully.

Kennedy avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Kennedy had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Santiago defends it easily.
Santiago with a flurry of punches that miss.
Santiago working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Santiago trying to control but Kennedy is working from the bottom.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Santiago advances to half guard.
Kennedy on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

Kennedy on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Kennedy tries to get out of the position.

Santiago moves nicely into side control.
Santiago has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Santiago has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Kennedy!

Santiago can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Kennedy is looking to escape.

Friar Santiago showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


The fight stays on the outside here - Kennedy looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Kennedy is looking to clinch but Santiago is avoiding it.
Kennedy moves in looking to clinch but Santiago pushes him off.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Santiago swats away the attempt to clinch by Kennedy.

Kennedy fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Santiago has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Kennedy tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Santiago manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Kennedy's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Santiago connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Kennedy scrambles back to his feet.

Friar Santiago is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Santiago lands with an uppercut that bounces Kennedy off the cage and back into range.
Kennedy slaps away a takedown attempt from Santiago, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Santiago throws a shot to the body.
Santiago thuds a left hand into Kennedy's body.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Santiago lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Kennedy at a distance.

Santiago shoots in and drives through. Kennedy sprawls well.

Santiago throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Trey Kennedy has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Santiago dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Santiago misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Kennedy.
Kennedy takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Santiago throws a body punch but Kennedy moves out of range.
The fighters circle momentarily. Santiago darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Friar Santiago seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Santiago paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

And that's the end of the fight!
Friar Santiago comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Santiago winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Friar Santiago spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
