Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Simon Sanders (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Simon Sanders!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tommy Jones!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Steve Erwin and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sanders clinches with his opponent.
Sanders jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Jones walks away with a smile on his face. Sanders gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Sanders closes the distance and clinches up with Jones, looking for a takedown. Sanders pushes Jones against the cage but Jones circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Sanders tries to pull guard but Jones holds him up against the cage and eventually Sanders drops back down to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Simon Sanders. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Jones breaks the clinch.
Jones wants to clinch.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sanders is defended easily by Jones.
Jones closes the distance looking to clinch
and Sanders makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

Sanders throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Jones's waist but Jones gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sanders off to one side.

and Sanders connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Tommy Jones is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Jones misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Sanders.
Jones using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Sanders has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Jones tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Sanders gets control of Jones's arms and successfully pulls guard. Sanders will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Sanders seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jones trying to control the position from guard on top but Sanders is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Jones has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Sanders is proving hard to escape from.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Sanders will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

A looping hook to the body misses from Sanders. Jones does a little dance to reset his feet.
A nice leg kick lands there from Jones.

That was a close round but I would say that Simon Sanders will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
