Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Lutor Brefro! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Sam Wangu! The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Paul Gruel and Roger Salmon.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Brefro leaves Wangu with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Brefro looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Wangu! The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Brefro looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. A bit of a lull in the action here. Brefro trying to control the position but Wangu is working away. Brefro wants to stand but Wangu is controlling his arm. Brefro tries for a kimura but Wangu is defending well. Wangu manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Brefro is trying to work for a kimura but Wangu is defending well.
Wangu pushes Brefro off and gets back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Brefro lands with a straight right. Wangu didn't see that one coming. Wangu slips under a jab from Brefro. Brefro closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Brefro lands in his opponent's guard. Wangu had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Brefro defends it easily. Wangu keeping moving, preventing Brefro from controlling successfully. Wangu throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Brefro throws a big right hand that misses. Wangu is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Brefro is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Wangu pulls his head out easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wangu moves into full mount! Brefro won't be happy about that! Brefro is in a horrible position here. Wangu smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Wangu is in the full mount, landing strikes. Wangu fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Wangu looking to finish Brefro with some ground and pound. This is bad for Brefro! Wangu prevents Brefro from getting the reversal. Wangu cracks Brefro with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wangu lands a big shot to the head and Brefro winces in pain. He's tapped out due to strikes!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Sam Wangu! During a confident post fight interview, Sam Wangu thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
