Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Mario Gomez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, David Zook! The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Dean Styles and Joseph Jones.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gomez throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Zook shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Crunch! Gomez slams his shin into Zook's torso. Gomez connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Zook throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gomez's waist but Gomez gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Zook off to one side. Zook is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gomez sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Mario Gomez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of David Zook. Zook wants to clinch. Zook tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Zook bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Zook defending well as Gomez loads up on a big left hand. Mario Gomez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Gomez displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Zook. Gomez waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Zook. Gomez misses with an attempted mid kick.
Zook shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Zook showed some decent athleticism there.
That's one minute gone in the round. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Gomez is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Zook pulls his head out easily. Zook seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Gomez slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Zook working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Zook postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Gomez pushes a forearm under Zook's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Zook is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Mario Gomez! A relieved looking Mario Gomez thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
