3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Tom Kruiz! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Igor Prikhodko and Illya Tyunina.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kruiz closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kruiz lands in his opponent's guard. Kowalski working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Kruiz. Kruiz preventing the sweep. Kruiz advances position into side control! Kruiz working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Kruiz thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. That's one minute gone in the round. Kruiz advances to mount. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kowalski holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Kruiz tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Kruiz is working for a guillotine from mount but Kowalski frees his head quite easily.
Kruiz working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Kowalski looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Kruiz! Submission of the night perhaps?
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Tom Kruiz! A very excited looking Tom Kruiz rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
