Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Steve Rogers! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bob Franklin! The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Damien Edna and Hugh Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Good standup being displayed there by Rogers as he connects with a hook.
It looks like Bob Franklin has been cut. Rogers throws a good cross that connects.
Franklin scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Franklin sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Rogers defending well though. Rogers keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Franklin is trying to control the action in half guard but Rogers is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Franklin throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Rogers avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Franklin. Rogers is trying to maintain the position but Franklin is very close to passing his half guard. Franklin seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Franklin is working for a submission of some sort.
That's one minute gone in the round. Franklin is thwarting Rogers's attempts to control the position. Franklin prevents Rogers from improving his position. Franklin misses with a head shot. Rogers uses the momentum to regain guard. Rogers looking to hit a scissor sweep but Franklin is one step ahead there. Franklin in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rogers manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Franklin manages to get himself to full guard.
Franklin has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rogers can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Rogers wants to control from the top but Franklin keeps moving. Rogers is stalling in the full guard. Rogers trying to control but Franklin is working from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Franklin can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rogers controls the pace. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Rogers tries to free his leg and advance position but Franklin is retaining full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Steve Rogers wasn't doing enough on the ground. Franklin takes a jab right on the kisser.
Rogers connects with a jab. Franklin gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Rogers cracks Franklin with a nice body shot. Franklin looks winded! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Rogers obliges. Rogers lands with a short shot to the head. Rogers wants the takedown. Franklin is fighting it off but Rogers persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Franklin's guard against the cage. Rogers slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Franklin keeping full guard, as Rogers tries to pass.
Steve Rogers has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. A leg kick checked by Franklin. Franklin drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
That has opened up Bob Franklin's cut even more. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Rogers cracks Franklin with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Franklin looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Rogers finish him?
Franklin is rocked! Franklin drops his hands momentarily. Rogers doesn't need a second invitation, landing a shot to the temple. Franklin staggers and falls to the mat and the ref dives in to save him from any more punishment. Franklin doesn't seem happy with the stoppage but he was done.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Steve Rogers!
