PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Evil Ryu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Stevie Wait (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wait is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Times Up. The key to victory for Evil Ryu has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Evil Ryu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Stevie Wait!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Chris Saunders and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ryu tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Wait counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Wait seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Ryu does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Wait misses with a head shot. Ryu uses the momentum to regain guard.
Wait pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Ryu is keeping the position for now.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wait trying to control the position from guard on top but Ryu is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Stevie Wait.

Ryu moves into range and clinches up with Wait.

Ryu breaks the clinch.
Wait misses with a combination
and Ryu counters with a big head kick but Wait shrugs it off.
Ryu tries to close the distance and clinch up but Wait swats him away and circles back towards the center.

and Wait counters with a takedown into side control.
Wait throws an elbow but Ryu slips to the side and avoids it well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Ryu wants to get back to his feet but Wait drags him back down.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Wait looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Ryu is avoiding damage well.
Wait working the ground and pound from side control.
Wait moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Wait throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Ryu works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Stevie Wait dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Ryu tries to clinch but Wait is having none of it.
Ryu tries to clinch up.
Ryu uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Wait.
Wait fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Ryu avoids it really well and circles away.
Ryu closes the distance looking to clinch

and Wait counters with a single leg into guard. Ryu didn't expect that.
Ryu wants to get back to his feet but Wait passes into half guard.
Wait is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Ryu reverses the position - he's now on top in Wait's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wait trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Wait bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ryu's guard.
Wait wants to control from the top but Ryu keeps moving.
Ryu is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wait throws a strike but Ryu rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Wait is trying to keep Ryu in close.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Wait working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Ryu has passed into half guard!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Stevie Wait showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Wait avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Ryu throws a right and a left that Wait avoids nicely.
Wait throws a low kick but it's checked well by Ryu.
Wait throws a good cross that connects.
Ryu fails to land with a series of punches.
Wait dives in and grabs Ryu's left leg, looking for a takedown. Ryu pushes down on Wait's head and hops out.

Ryu fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Wait, pushing him back against the ropes.

Ryu's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Evil Ryu seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ryu tries to grapple but his opponent circles

so Wait counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wait trying to control the position from guard on top but Ryu is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Ryu wants to stand up but Wait is controlling him.

Stevie Wait has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Wait swats away the attempt to clinch by Ryu.
Ryu looks to score with a jab to the body but Wait is just out of range.
Ryu wants to clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Ryu uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Wait.
Ryu tries to clinch up.
Ryu fails in his attempt to clinch.
Wait walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Ryu checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Ryu tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Ryu throws a nice looking combination but Wait bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
A jab from Wait finds it's way through Ryu's defenses.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Ryu moves into the clinch successfully.
Ryu lands a hook to the side of the head.
A short right from Ryu.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close third round but Stevie Wait just about did enough to take it.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Ryu scores with a head kick. Wait tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.

Ryu forces Wait back against the ropes and clinches.
Ryu lands a knee to the body.
Ryu scores with a nice hook to the head.
Ryu digs a right hand underneath Wait's ribcage. Wait let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Ryu lands an elbow inside.
Ryu misses with a body punch.
Ryu lands a nice knee to the body.
Ryu lands a body shot.
Ryu working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.


Wait is rocked!
Wait is trying to drag Ryu to the mat but Ryu just about manages to keep his footing. He used the ropes to his advantage there.
Wait is still on wobbly legs! Can Ryu finish him?
Wait takes a knee to the side of the body.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Ryu with a knee to the head.
Ryu lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Wait is pressed against the ropes. Ryu pushes back and unleashes a big elbow that really hurts Wait! Two more big strikes from Ryu and Wait crumples to the mat and taps out furiously due to the strikes!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 4, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Evil Ryu!
Evil Ryu decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
