PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kazushi Sakuraba (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roger Marsden (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kazushi Sakuraba!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Roger Marsden!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Paul Aken and Wagner Zegers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Sakuraba is looking to break free of the clinch but Marsden has double underhooks.

Marsden gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Sakuraba regains guard.
Marsden cracks Sakuraba with a solid left hand.
Sakuraba tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Marsden working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Sakuraba's head.

Marsden drops back looking for a leg! Sakuraba is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Sakuraba manages to kick Marsden off! Marsden jumps back into Sakuraba's guard.

Sakuraba has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Marsden can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Marsden passes into half guard.
Sakuraba is trying to get back to full guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Sakuraba on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Sakuraba trying to control from the bottom.

Marsden is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Sakuraba sees it coming and defends easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Marsden wants to work for an arm triangle but Sakuraba is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Marsden has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Sakuraba wants to get back to full guard but Marsden has passed into side control.
Sakuraba is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Marsden off and has taken his back!
Marsden rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Sakuraba tries to pass to full mount but Marsden defends it.
Marsden is trying to control but can't.

Marsden looking for submissions off his back.
Sakuraba wants to pass to mount but Marsden is defending the position.

Marsden makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Marsden.

Marsden is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Sakuraba has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Sakuraba throwing strikes but missing.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Sakuraba is looking to advance position but Marsden has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Sakuraba is trying to escape the mount.
Marsden lands a heavy elbow.
Marsden is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Marsden working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Sakuraba is bucking up trying to escape but Marsden cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Marsden with the ground and pound from mount.

Marsden is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Sakuraba to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Sakuraba shrugs it off.
Sakuraba is trying desperately to improve position.
Sakuraba is working hard here to advance position.
Marsden lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Marsden lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Sakuraba hang on?


Sakuraba is rocked!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Marsden has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Sakuraba's face.
Oh Sakuraba is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Sakuraba can't escape the position.
Marsden loads up on a couple of big shots to the head that have Sakuraba scrambling to escape. He can't get free though and several more unanswered shots from Marsden land to the head. The referee has no choice but to stop the fight. Marsden stands and salutes the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Roger Marsden!
Roger Marsden seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
