PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Peter Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Terry Eckel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Terry Eckel will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Peter Griffin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Terry Eckel!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Aleksandr Martynov and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Eckel tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Griffin swivels and escapes.

Griffin clinches with his opponent.
Griffin on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Eckel drops down looking for an ankle pick but Griffin pulls his leg out and moves away.
Eckel looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Peter Griffin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Terry Eckel.
No luck for Eckel with that takedown attempt.

Griffin closes the distance and clinches.

Eckel breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Griffin clinches up with Eckel and pushes him back against the cage.
Eckel jumps guard but Griffin stands there with Eckel around his waist. Eckel gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Griffin has Eckel pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Griffin pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Eckel tumbling to the mat - Griffin dives into Eckel's guard.
Griffin postures up.
Griffin controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Griffin pushing down on Eckel's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Griffin seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Griffin is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Griffin wants to control but Eckel is keeping him busy.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Griffin tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Griffin moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Eckel has worked his arm free - good work by Eckel!

Griffin advances to full mount.

Griffin has hold of Eckel's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Eckel manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Eckel tries to hold on but Griffin postures up.
Griffin looking to control and managing it successfully.
Griffin wants to control the pace but Eckel is squirming around nicely.

Griffin swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Eckel is now in Griffin's guard. A big mistake from Griffin there, giving up the dominant position!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Griffin has taken the fight to the clinch.
Eckel fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Griffin jumps into guard, dragging Eckel to the mat.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Eckel accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Eckel wants to control from the top but Griffin keeps moving.

Eckel must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Griffin is looking to get back to full guard here but Eckel has managed to pass to side control instead.

Eckel is trying to control the action in half guard but Griffin is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Griffin wants to take a breather but Eckel is having none of it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Griffin is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Griffin avoids the attempt from Eckel to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Peter Griffin dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Griffin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Eckel swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Griffin looking to sit in guard and control but Eckel gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Griffin working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Eckel has passed into half guard!
Eckel wants to take a breather but Griffin is having none of it.
Eckel throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Eckel passes into side control, despite Griffin's attempt to control the position.
Griffin trying to control but Eckel flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!
You can see the frustration on Griffin's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Eckel doesn't have the hooks in and Griffin manages to turn into his guard.
Eckel controls Griffin momentarily but Griffin frees himself.

Griffin postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Eckel is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Griffin, into his guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Eckel is stalling in the full guard.
Eckel is fighting to break Griffin's control of his arms but Griffin is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Eckel throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Griffin works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Eckel avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Terry Eckel has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Eckel wants to control from the top but Griffin keeps moving.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Peter Griffin.
Well Griffin has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
