PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Vladimir Shavnetski (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fedor Emelianenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Emelianenko's choice of entrance music: Enea Vollare Mezzo. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Fedor Emelianenko!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Konstantin Menshow and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Emelianenko bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Shavnetski's head.
Shavnetski tries to clinch up but Emelianenko circles away and keeps his distance.
Vladimir Shavnetski seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Shavnetski tries to close the distance and clinch but Emelianenko swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Shavnetski tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Emelianenko paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Shavnetski throws a right hand that Emelianenko ducks under and follows up with a left that Emelianenko also avoids with ease.

Emelianenko tries to break the clinch but Shavnetski is controlling the position.
Emelianenko is trying to break free.

Emelianenko tightens his grip and picks Shavnetski up, before dumping him to the ground. Shavnetski manages to land in guard.

Shavnetski throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Emelianenko content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Shavnetski wants to sweep but no luck.

Emelianenko is looking to work some ground and pound but Shavnetski has wrist control.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Shavnetski misses with a head kick.
Shavnetski looks to score with a jab to the body but Emelianenko is just out of range.
Shavnetski misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Emelianenko closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Emelianenko lands in his opponent's guard.
Shavnetski is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Emelianenko stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Shavnetski swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Shavnetski has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Emelianenko with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Emelianenko must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Shavnetski has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Emelianenko can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Shavnetski is breathing heavily.
Shavnetski tries to strike from the bottom.
Emelianenko wants to stand and escape but instead Shavnetski has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Emelianenko is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Emelianenko connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Emelianenko shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Emelianenko was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Shavnetski can't escape the position.
Emelianenko connects with a couple of good shots from mount.


Shavnetski is rocked!
Emelianenko postures up and throws a couple of big shots that have Shavnetski in real trouble here! The ref calls for Shavnetski to improve his position which he doesn't do, so the referee has no choice but to end the fight due to the strikes!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:01 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Fedor Emelianenko!
