Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
31 - 24 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Renzo Gracie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
21 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jeremy Cunnigham! The judges for this bout are William Peck, Ian Loll and Trevor Gratis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gracie takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt. A lazy left from Cunnigham finds it's target. Gracie is looking to clinch. Gracie takes a body punch but keeps moving. Cunnigham tries to sprawl but Gracie drives through with a takedown into half guard. Cunnigham tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Cunnigham tries to kick Gracie off but Gracie keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Gracie is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Cunnigham is looking to improve his position.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Gracie seems to be looking for submissions.
Cunnigham is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Gracie is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Cunnigham is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Gracie pulls his head out easily. Cunnigham has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Cunnigham actively working from the bottom here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cunnigham landing rabbit punches to the side of Gracie's head. Not doing much damage but still scoring a few points. Gracie is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Cunnigham pushes Gracie off looking to stand but Gracie dives back in and keeps control.
Cunnigham works his way to full guard. Good work. Cunnigham bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gracie's guard. Gracie is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Gracie preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Cunnigham makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Cunnigham postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Cunnigham trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Cunnigham pushes down on Gracie's leg and manages to get into half guard. Cunnigham scoring with strikes to the body and head. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Gracie wants to get back to full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cunnigham slips a nice elbow through Gracie's hands, connecting with Gracie's forehead. Gracie wants to improve his position but Cunnigham is controlling well.
Gracie regains full guard. Nicely done. Gracie looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Gracie is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Gracie is breathing heavily. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Cunnigham's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Cunnigham is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Cunnigham passes Gracie's left leg - he's now in half guard. Gracie tries to roll over but Cunnigham keeps him under control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Cunnigham drops an elbow to the side of Gracie's head. Gracie wants to get back to full guard. Cunnigham working Gracie over with strikes. Cunnigham looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Gracie with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Cunnigham seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Gracie is rocked!
That's three minutes gone in the round. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Cunnigham lands a nice short elbow. Oh Gracie is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Cunnigham scores with a big shot! Gracie's head bounced off the canvas with a huge thud! More strikes land and the referee has jumped in to save Gracie! He was hurt real bad - good stoppage!
