Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Chris Demetrio! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Robi Vio! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Luis Engracia and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Demetrio gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Vio counters by clinching up. Demetrio has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Vio uses from the top position. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Demetrio wants to sweep here but Vio controlling him for the moment. Vio must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Vio has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Demetrio is proving hard to escape from. Demetrio has Vio pulled in close to control his posture. Demetrio will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
That's one minute gone in the round.
We're going to have a standup here because Chris Demetrio wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Demetrio shoots in and drives through. Vio sprawls well. Excellent takedown into side control there by Demetrio. Vio wants to get back to his feet but Demetrio drags him back down. Vio is working to avoid the ground and pound but Demetrio connects with a decent elbow. Vio really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Demetrio. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Demetrio tries to stand but Vio controls the position and pulls Demetrio into his guard. Demetrio trying to control the position from guard on top but Vio is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Demetrio postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Vio is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Demetrio, into his guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Demetrio pulls Vio in close to his closed guard and prevents Vio from doing any damage or advancing position. Vio is looking to stand up but Demetrio won't let him. Vio wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Demetrio's closed guard. He's half up but Demetrio has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Demetrio pivots and extends the arm, Vio falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Demetrio! Well done that man!
