Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Phil Sommer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zach Gates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Phil Sommer! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Zach Gates! The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Bruno Hogan and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sommer closes this distance looking for a takedown but Gates circles away. Gates uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Sommer has time to react. Zach Gates seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Sommer shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Gates dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Sommer takes one to the side of the head.
Gates stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gates wants it to stay on the feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Phil Sommer. That's going to take a lot out of him. Gates throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. Gates fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Sommer looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Sommer looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Gates is fending him off so far but Sommer persists. Nope, Gates circles away and we're back to standing. Sommer misses with a takedown and Gates counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt. Gates connects with a body shot that sends Sommer's belly button to the back. Gates feints a jab promting Sommer to slip. Gates then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Sommer slips again and ducks right into an uppercut. Gates is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Sommer rather than just go for the knockout. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Jab by Gates. Sommer looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple. Sommer darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Sommer is breathing heavily. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Gates trying to control but Sommer postures up.

Gates works his way to full guard. Good work. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sommer tries to free his leg and advance position but Gates is retaining full guard. Gates is trying to control the position but Sommer postures up. Gates is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Gates seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Sommer does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Gates is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Sommer is looking to improve his position.
Sommer is not content to let Gates control the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sommer looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Sommer is refusing to be controlled, as Gates sits in half guard. Sommer is defending against the submission attempts here by Gates.
Gates is keen to just control but Sommer is a slippery customer. Gates is looking for a kimura but Sommer is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gates to get the leverage. Gates is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Sommer is just riding it out for now. Gates eventually gives up the hold. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Gates works his way into full mount!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sommer wants to hold on but Gates pushes him away. Sommer is working to get back to half guard.
Gates wants to take Sommer's back but he can't do it this time. Gates working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. Gates is trying to take his opponent's back.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sommer tries to get back to half guard but can't. Gates tries to control but Sommer wriggling away. Gates prevents Sommer from getting the reversal. Gates looking to control but Sommer is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sommer is working to get back to half guard.
Gates can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Sommer is looking to escape. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Sommer wants to control but Gates is having none of it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Zach Gates dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Nice uppercut there from Gates. Phil Sommer is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Sommer. Gates lands a nice shot to the body.
Gates slaps away a takedown attempt from Sommer, before circling back to the center of the mat. Gates cracks a nice hook into Sommer's ribs. Sommer is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gates sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Phil Sommer. That's going to take a lot out of him. Sommer walks into a jab. Gates changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Gates throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Sommer takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Gates connects with a jab. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Gates shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Sommer eats them both and turns towards Gates to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo. Zach Gates seems to be getting the better of the standup. Sommer throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gates's waist but Gates gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sommer off to one side. A shot to the liver by Gates. Beautiful body shot. Gates scores with a body shot.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gates scores with a sloppy right hand. Sommer should have avoided that one. Gates stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush. Gates connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Sommer takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Gates comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Nice straight punches there by Gates. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Gates. Gates jabs Sommer to the body, keeping him at a distance. Gates ducks down and throws a hook to the body. Gates scores with a body shot.
Gates lands with a good body shot. The fighters circle momentarily. Gates darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch. Gates lands with a right hand. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Gates lands with a nice body punch. Sommer takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Gates lands with a straight right. Sommer didn't see that one coming. Sommer is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Gates. Gates works over Sommer's head and body with a nice combination.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lazy left from Gates finds it's target. Gates lands a nice shot to the body.

Gates punishes Sommer's body with a nice straight punch. Gates jabs Sommer to the body, keeping him at a distance. Jab by Gates. Gates scores with a three punch combo!
Gates throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. Gates dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Sommer looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that. Gates connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Sommer momentarily.
Gates slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range. Sommer fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Decent striking displayed by Gates there. Gates lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Sommer on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere. Gates scores with a one two! Sommer had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gates throws a series of strikes that have Sommer backpedaling.
Gates scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Gates has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Gates thuds a left hand into Sommer's body. Sommer looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple. Gates lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Sommer backs up against the cage.
Sommer scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Sommer looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Gates regains full guard. Nicely done. Gates wants to sweep here but Sommer controlling him for the moment. Sommer trying to move into half guard but instead Gates has managed to sweep!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gates wants to control from the top but Sommer keeps moving. Sommer is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Gates looking to pass the guard. Zach Gates has got the better of the ground game so far. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Sommer is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Gates not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Sommer keeping moving, preventing Gates from controlling successfully. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Zach Gates showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!
Sommer walks into a straight right hand from Gates. Sommer gets a takedown into half guard. Sommer looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Gates is refusing to be controlled, as Sommer sits in half guard. Sommer trying to mount his opponent but Gates defends it. Sommer looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Gates trying to control but Sommer postures up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily. Gates gets back to full guard.
Gates tries to land a sweep but no joy.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gates keeping full guard, as Sommer tries to pass. Sommer looking to sit in guard and control but Gates gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Gates looking to pass the guard. Gates wants to control from the top but Sommer keeps moving. Gates stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sommer swivels though and keeps the full guard. Gates slips nicely into half guard. Gates is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sommer is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Gates works his foot free and advances to mount. Sommer is wriggling around trying to escape.
Gates wants to control the pace but Sommer is squirming around nicely. Sommer is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Gates locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Sommer is forced to tap!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Zach Gates! In his post fight interview, Zach Gates started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
