Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Dida Gustavo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Santos! The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Skip Squint and Damien Edna.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Santos closes the distance and clinches. Santos pulls guard effortlessly. Gustavo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Santos swivels though and keeps the full guard. Santos trying to keep a closed guard but Gustavo is proving a slippery customer.
Gustavo knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Santos on the ground. Gustavo wants to stand and escape but instead Santos has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard. Santos advances position into side control! Gustavo tries to get back to half guard but can't. Santos tries for a kimura but Gustavo is defending well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gustavo is pushing Santos's head away, looking to escape. Santos manages to hold on to the position though. A control attempt from Gustavo but he's now mounted! Santos avoids the attempt from Gustavo to control. Santos sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! Gustavo is looking to improve his position but Santos isn't that keen on the idea.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gustavo wants to control but Santos is having none of it. Gustavo tries to reverse the position but Santos maintains control. Gustavo tries to hold on but Santos postures up. Gustavo keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Santos throws some wild stikes that Gustavo manages to avoid easily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Santos looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Santos landing strikes from the mount and Gustavo is in trouble! Gustavo keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Santos thowing shots but they're missing. Gustavo wants to hold on but Santos pushes him away. Santos quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Santos but it's paid off an Gustavo is forced to tap! Nice work by Santos.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). John Santos! A relieved looking John Santos thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
