PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Alexej Stepanov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gabriel Whitaker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gabriel Whitaker told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Alexej Stepanov!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Gabriel Whitaker!
The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Aafke Stam and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Whitaker attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Nice straight punches there by Stepanov. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Stepanov.
Stepanov's jab looks to have found its range, popping Whitaker under the eye.
Whitaker circles away from the clinch attempt.
Stepanov bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Stepanov with a poor takedown

and Whitaker counters with a shoot takedown. Stepanov fights it but they end up in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Whitaker slips nicely into half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Whitaker uses his free foot to push down on Stepanov's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Stepanov.
Stepanov has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Stepanov manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Whitaker trying to control from half guard but Stepanov is working away.
Stepanov knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Whitaker on the ground.
Whitaker moves into full mount! Stepanov won't be happy about that!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Stepanov slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Whitaker is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Stepanov doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Whitaker.

Whitaker is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Stepanov is just riding it out for now. Whitaker eventually gives up the hold.

Whitaker is looking for a kimura but Stepanov is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Whitaker to get the leverage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Whitaker thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Stepanov's head.
Stepanov is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Whitaker seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Stepanov is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Gabriel Whitaker!

A less than humble Gabriel Whitaker misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
