The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kowalsky drives through with a takedown into Materla's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Materla had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Kowalsky defends it easily.
Kowalsky drops back, looking for a kneebar! Materla looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Materla looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Materla!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kowalsky manages to work his way to half guard, despite Materla's best efforts.
Kowalsky is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Materla's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Materla's back!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kowalsky has got one arm under Materla's chin. This could be trouble... Materla trying to control the other hand but Kowalsky gets it free and sqeezes tight - just a matter of time now! Yep, Materla has tapped out! The fight is over!
