PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Freddy Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Jorge (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alves comes to the cage accompanied by Trik Turner - Friends and Family. Jorge has chosen Back in black as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 25 - 22 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Freddy Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 17 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, James Jorge!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Mauricio Rocha and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sloppy strikes from Alves. Those never looked like landing.
A jab from Alves misses.
Jorge fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Alves throws a looping overhand right but Jorge ducks down to avoid it.
Alves throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Alves slips a jab and a cross from Jorge.
Jorge misses with a series of wild punches.

Jorge manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Alves on his heels. He'll look to pass Alves's guard now, I'm sure.
Jorge postures up in Alves's guard and throws a big left but Alves blocks it.
Jorge throws an elbow that misses. Alves uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jorge's guard. Nice move by Alves!
Jorge keeping moving, preventing Alves from controlling successfully.
Alves is fighting to break Jorge's control of his arms but Jorge is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Alves trying to control the position from guard on top but Jorge is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Jorge looking to hit a scissor sweep but Alves is one step ahead there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jorge controls Alves momentarily but Alves frees himself.

OK we're going to have a standup here. James Jorge hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Horrible takedown by Jorge or perhaps it was just good defense by Alves which made him look bad.
Alves digs a good body shot into Jorge's ribs.
Jorge scores with a decent looking hook.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Alves avoids a punch combination nicely.
A left lands for Alves.


It looks like James Jorge has been cut.
Jorge throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Alves counters with a left to the body.
Jorge throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Alves tries to bum rush Jorge with a series of wild strikes but Jorge uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Jorge shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Alves as he jumps to the side.
Alves misses the jab.
A big right from Alves misses.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Left hook, right uppercut from Jorge.
Jorge keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Jorge jabs Alves right on the nose. Alves blinks but takes it well.

Jorge changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Alves tries to avoid it but Jorge manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Alves to the ground. Alves escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Freddy Alves has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Jorge.

Alves showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Jorge.
Jorge closes the distance and lands a one-two.
A big left from Jorge misses.
Alves throws a series of punches but Jorge avoids them all with ease.
A lazy left from Jorge finds it's target.
Jorge misses with the combination.
Jorge throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Alves sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Alves has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Jorge darts in looking for a takedown but Alves gets double underhooks and turns Jorge into the cage.
Alves is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.
Jorge jumps guard but Alves turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Jorge tries to stall but Alves uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Alves's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Jorge misses with a few strikes there.
Alves lands a two punch combo.
Jorge throws a hook to the side of Alves's head but Alves sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Alves drops Jorge with a left and a right! Oh, Jorge is hurt - Alves dives into side control looking to finish!


Jorge is rocked!
Jorge is working to avoid the ground and pound but Alves connects with a decent elbow.
Jorge is still in real trouble! Can Alves finish him?
Jorge struggling a bit here.
Alves works to advance to full mount. Jorge defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Alves is landing with some decent strikes but Jorge is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Jorge is desperately trying to improve his position but Alves has a good base and remains in mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alves avoids the attempt from Jorge to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Freddy Alves will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on James Jorge's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


A combination from Jorge does no damage.
Jorge seems to have recovered his senses.
Alves is trying hard to land a takedown here. Jorge sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Jorge lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Alves backs up against the cage.
Jorge misses with a takedown attempt
and Alves counters with a one-two to the body.
Jorge dodges the punch combination from Alves.
Jorge keeps the fight on the outside.
Freddy Alves is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Alves looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Jorge shoots in and gets a takedown into Alves's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Alves manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Jorge manages to get himself to full guard.
Jorge is looking to stand up but Alves isn't so interested in that idea.

Alves throwing strikes but missing.
Alves trying to control but Jorge is working from the bottom.
Jorge throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Alves wants to control from the top but Jorge keeps moving.
Jorge not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Alves postures up in Jorge's guard and throws a big left but Jorge blocks it.
Alves throws a big right hand that misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Alves stays in close to Jorge's body and controls the position.
Alves throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Jorge works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Jorge scores with a one two! Alves had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Jorge throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Jorge has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Jorge there as he acknowledges the shot.
Jorge walks into a stiff left hand from Alves.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Alves is looking to clinch but Jorge is avoiding it.
Alves scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.


That has opened up James Jorge's cut even more.
Jorge misses with a wild combination.
Alves scores with a nice head shot.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Alves lands with a hook. Jorge tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Alves displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jorge.
James Jorge seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jorge gets clipped by a big right hand and goes down spinning to the canvas! Alves gets the back mount and begins to drop bombs on his rocked foe! Jorge is too out of it to defend against the strikes and the referee jumps in to save him from the beatdown!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:17 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Freddy Alves!
During a confident post fight interview, Freddy Alves thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
James Jorge was interviewed post fight and said 'É uma pena ter sofrido essa derrota, tive problemas na preparação mas agora tenho que por a cabeça no lugar e continuar os treinamentos, para que na próxima vez eu possa fazer bonito.'.
