Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Luis Barrera! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
22 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jeremy Cunnigham! The judges for this bout are William Peck, Alec Ball and Dillan Fox.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cunnigham fails with the takedown. Cunnigham tries to sprawl but Barrera drives through with a takedown into half guard. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Cunnigham looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Cunnigham tries to roll over but Barrera keeps him under control. Barrera works his foot free and advances to mount. Cunnigham swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing. Cunnigham tries to get back to half guard but can't. Barrera lands a heavy elbow. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Barrera connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Cunnigham is rocked! Cunnigham sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. Barrera trying to mount his opponent but Cunnigham defends it. Cunnigham is pressing down on Barrera's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Cunnigham is trying to keep Barrera in close.
Barrera distracts Cunnigham with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cunnigham lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Barrera! Cunnigham lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Cunnigham breaks from Barrera's wrist control and lands an elbow. Barrera sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Barrera trying to hold on to Cunnigham's head to control him but Cunnigham postures up.
Cunnigham looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Barrera with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Barrera is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Cunnigham's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Cunnigham's back! Cunnigham tries to escape the position.
Barrera is working on the RNC. He looks like he's got it but Cunnigham won't tap... Oh, he's out! The ref rips Barrera off his unconscious opponent!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Luis Barrera! Luis Barrera really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that GTI - 1337 sponsors VERSUS logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
