PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Norman Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gilbert Melendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Melendez comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Eminem - Survival kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Norman Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 2, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gilbert Melendez!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Melendez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Melendez takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Diaz misses with a straight left.
Diaz fails with an attempt to clinch.
Norman Diaz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

so Melendez counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Diaz is looking for a triangle here but Melendez uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Diaz tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Melendez wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
You can see the frustration on Diaz's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Melendez seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
It looks like Melendez might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Melendez tries to score with some ground and pound. Diaz controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Diaz is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at Silverback MMA Academy (Elite + Sauna & 160VM) that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Diaz is not content to let Melendez control the position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Gilbert Melendez dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Melendez shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Melendez shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Diaz's guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Norman Diaz.

Diaz throws a right hand that Melendez ducks under and follows up with a left that Melendez also avoids with ease.

Melendez slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

That was a close second round but I would say that Norman Diaz will probably get the nod.

Nice takedown defense from Diaz. No joy for Melendez on that attempt.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Diaz lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Melendez has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Melendez and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Let's hope that Melendez has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Gilbert Melendez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Melendez has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
