PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jong Jong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tomasz Kowalski (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kowalski has chosen Two Steps From Hell - Heart of Courage (Extended Version) as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Jong Jong could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Tomasz Kowalski's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jong Jong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Tomasz Kowalski!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jong pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Kowalski shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Kowalski ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Kowalski darts in looking for a takedown but Jong gets double underhooks and turns Kowalski into the cage.
A nice left hand lands by Jong.
Jong is trying to break the clinch but Kowalski has him pressed against the cage.
Kowalski is looking to take this one to the mat.
Kowalski tries to pull guard but Jong holds him up against the cage and eventually Kowalski drops back down to his feet.
Jong Jong has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tomasz Kowalski.

Jong wants the takedown. Kowalski is fighting it off but Jong persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Kowalski's guard against the cage.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Jong avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Kowalski wants to improve his position but instead Jong has moved into half guard.
Kowalski has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Jong is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kowalski tries to roll over but Jong keeps him under control.

Kowalski is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Jong is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Kowalski to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Kowalski shrugs it off.

Jong wants to take his opponent's back but Kowalski doesn't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jong looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Kowalski tries to reverse the position but Jong maintains control.

Kowalski wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Kowalski tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Jong is persistently looking for the submission but Kowalski is defending it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Jong throws a looping overhand right but Kowalski ducks down to avoid it.
The fighters circling - Jong throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Jong Jong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jong throws a poor cross that misses

and Kowalski counters by clinching up.

Jong wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Kowalski has him pressed against the cage.

Kowalski is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kowalski manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Jong manages to get himself to full guard.

Jong working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kowalski doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kowalski manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Kowalski is looking to work some ground and pound but Jong has wrist control.

Jong has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kowalski can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Kowalski won't allow Jong to get back to his feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Jong wants to sweep here but Kowalski controlling him for the moment.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kowalski accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

and Kowalski counters with a three punch combo that has Jong backing up. Jong nods at Kowalski to acknowledge the strikes.
Jong shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Kowalski sprawls well. Kowalski wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Jong gets slowly back to his feet.

Jong moves out of range of the body kick.
Kowalski moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
A big right from Jong misses.
Jong throws a jab but it's blocked by Kowalski.
Nice uppercut lands for Jong. That snapped Kowalski's head back.

Kowalski looks for the body kick but Jong saw that one coming.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jong sizes up Kowalski with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Kowalski throws a strike but Jong rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Jong is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.

Jong shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Kowalski's guard.
Jong might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Kowalski has his feet on Jong's thighs here. He's pushed Jong off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Jong screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
